Huggies for newborn; a snug fit and and appropriate cut

Diapers, diapers, diapers. There must be at least 6-7 major diaper makers, with each one making a bunch of different types of diapers in each size. That can make shopping for diapers a complex task! So with our newest addition came the need to go back into the diaper market (just as the older child is mastering potty-training). This time though, we were able to save ourselves some trouble because many people gave us diapers as baby presents instead of clothing or gift cards or things that look useful but really aren't (like the third bottle washer set for parents that plan to breastfeed and not use bottles). For a diaper, there are probably two things that are important, absorption and fit, so I'll break this review down into those two areas.
Absorption-
We had used these diapers briefly with our first child, but shortly afterward switched to cloth diapers. For this child, we plan on doing something similar, although we won't go 100% cloth. So I'll compare the absorption to both cloth and the other brands of diapers we have used.
So far, the huggies have only had a couple of leaks, and those I blame on not having the diaper on properly. Changing a diaper at 3AM can be a bit challenging, and every leaky diaper we've had has been one put on in the middle of the night, so I think the correlation is apparent. Newborns don't tend to have huge loads, instead having lots of little loads every couple of hours, and these diapers do fine with that type of changing pattern. If we go more than 2 hours between changing, you can definitely see the size of the diaper increase. If we went much longer than that, I would expect to encounter some leakage.
The other thing that I have noticed is that, if you do stay on a regular changing schedule, there is less dampness around the crotch and legs. As that diaper fills up, the skin gets damper, increasing the likelihood of diaper rash.
Compared to other diapers, it seems like the huggies aren't able to hold as much as other diapers like the pampers. They do though hold more than our cloth diapers did (you pretty much HAD to change the diaper every hour or two at most or you would have a sopping wet baby to deal with). Newer cloth diapers are supposed to hold up a bit better, and there are all sorts of inserts and extras that you can use to improve absorption, so if you add on those types of bells and whistles, you should be able to get equivalent absorption out of your cloth diapers.
Final verdict- good diaper as long as you make sure to change the baby on a regular schedule of every 2-3 hours. Going longer than that can introduce wetness and increase the chances that the diaper will leak on you. Grade: B
Fit-
I actually like the fit of these huggies the best of the diapers we have used so far. Our child started out at about 7 and a half pounds and is up to about 10 pounds now and the huggies still fit (although probably not for much longer). What is nice is that they have a cutout for the belly button, so you don't have to worry about folding the top of the diaper over so that the belly button isn't irritated by the diaper. It may seem like a minor point, but when you just want to change that diaper and go back to bed, any step that can be cut out of the process is welcome!
Compared to the pampers swaddlers, the huggies don't fit quite as well around the legs, but they fit well enough. The pampers are a bit more contoured for a newborn, while the huggies are more of a standard cut like any larger sized diapers. They do fit better than the cloth diapers we used, as those were designed for older babies (maybe 3-6 months to begin with). So we would occasionally get some leakage with the cloth diapers because of the poor fit around the legs. My son doesn't complain (i.e. cry or whimper) because of the snugness of his diaper, and we haven't run into any issues with the baby wiggling out of the diaper (amazing how much movement there is even with several week old babies).
Final verdict- average cut, but notch for the belly button is a time-saver and bumps up my grade for the diaper. Grade: B+
Overall verdict-
These are perfectly fine diapers for just about any newborn. The cut leaving the belly button exposed is a nice touch, and considering the cost of diapers, it's nice to get something extra like that. They are absorbent enough to go for a few hours before filling and snug enough to not accidentally come off.
Final Grade- B+
