This restaurant has become one of the highlights of the Seattle waterfront, and for good reason. The fish 'n' chips stand on the street is yummy enough, but the restaurant on the bay side of Pier 54 raises Ivar's to a whole new level, that of a premier seafood restaurant. Dinner there can add up to a hefty tab, but if you've got family in town, they'll be impressed (especially if they're new to Seattle). I like to make it one of my Christmas shopping stops if I've got any money left over. Ivar's serves a fine variety of seafood, including the obligatory fish 'n' chips, but the added service and ambiance of sitting down to a nice waterfront meal make it something special.
Parking at the waterfront may or may not be easy; there is a lot of metered parking and a number of pay garages/lots under the Alaskan Way Viaduct and on the Pike Place hillclimb, but in peak seasons, it fills up early. There is a trolley that runs along the waterfront during the day, though, which can be a fun trip in itself. Skip over the sidewalk stand, though, and you'll reach the real "acres of clams" (Ivar's historical slogan), featuring excellent service and good food to boot. You can smell the salt from the sea inside, and as the sun sets on the Sound, the view can't be beat. The place is big enough that you won't have to wait long, even without reservations, but it does play host to some larger parties, so you may want to call ahead anyway. Anyone touring Seattle definitely shouldn't miss the waterfront, and anyone touring the waterfront definitely shouldn't miss Ivar's.
