| le71's Full Review: JVC HR-S2901 S-VHS VCR |
I paid only $50 for this clearance new unit at Circuit City. This is my third JVC unit. The first one is 20-yr old, in the kid room, and recently got broken due to the abuse. The second one is 10-yr-old and still working in our bedroom. this one is down stair. The second unit is heavier and has more display on the unit. This one is light weight due to more plastic component and less display on the front of the unit. However, it is quieter and faster. For $50, I don't think that I can ask for more.
The bottome line, I believe in JVC brand as far as VHS. However, quality of durability seems to decrease as there are more plastic part, thus, explaining this unit is lighter than old one. However, with the improvement in technology, loading and ejecting the VHS tape seems to be faster and much quieter, which I truly love. In addition, every time I load a tape, this unit has an internal calibration to improve the quality of the picture, such as how stretch is the tape, was it recorded on EP or SP, ect... This unit scan all the cable channels more accurately than the old unit. On the old unit, I had to delete some channels having mirky reception. On this new JVC unit, I didn't have to do that. First time setting is fairly simple and easy. Setting the clock can be a little confusing since it has various version, especially the regional timer for daylight vs. non daylight saving. When the unit is on, the front display only the channel. If I want to see the counter, or how much is left in the tape, or to see the clock, I need to press enter to see the on-screen display. Unless I turn the unit off, I'll be able to see the clock. The old unit has the counter on the front display, but it does not tell me how much is in the remaining of the tape like thise new JVC version. Since the new JVC is light, the spouse often like it better that way. Guys, on the other hand, often prefer the study-rugged-heavy equipemtn to stand the durability of time.
