| MrLogic's Full Review: John Deere Lawn Tractor |
I've owned my LX277 for over a year now, which should give a good basis for a review. I selected a John Deere because of it's reputation - by more than one person.
I went with this model becase it was the largest of the air-cooled models. Air cooled means simpler construction and less maintence. (If I wasn't lazy, I'd still be using a push mower!) I went with the 48" deck because I've got 2 acres.
After more than a season of use, I can say that this mower has been the best running machine I've used! My lawn is very hilly, so I notice if an engine strains under load. No problems with this tractor. I have noticed that traction isn't the best when turning on a steep hill. I may be asking too much from a mower lighter than a car, and it's not that big a problem.
Changing the oil is easy, though the plastic drain extender might not hold up through the years. Air filter cleaning/replacment takes a look through the manual the first time - it involves completely removing the hood from the mower. Blade removal is normally difficult, but you'll need a ramp to avoid having to remove the whole deck. That process looked ugly enough that I've avoided it.
Other pro's:
-Very nice (huge) gas cap. Easy to read clear gas tank.
-Tilt-up seat with a drain. Sounds silly, but a great feature.
-Easy to use controls. The forward/reverse foot controls feel very natural.
Other con's:
-48" deck is too wide for most lawn sheds. My shed is empty because the mower just won't fit!
-A safety feature kills the engine if you leave the seat. Killing the blades would have been good enough for me. See a stick lurking in the tall grass? Gotta restart the mower or learn to lean over while pressing on the seat.
-Cost. But it's worth it in the long run!
