| Freak369's Full Review: Johnson & Johnson Acuvue 2 Lenses |
I am thoroughly convinced that the optometrist that examined me is a complete moron. For the past 15 years my eye prescription has been -2.00 in both eyes and all of a sudden this new doc is telling me that my left eye is -2.25 and my right eye is -2.75. When she gave me a trial pair to try out with the new strengths I had a lot of trouble seeing clearly - I could see things more than two or three feet away but anything closer than that was blurry or distorted. I went back two times to see if maybe there was a problem with the strength and she adjusted them to -2.75 in both eyes. I decided to give them an honest try with -2.75 in both eyes but I was still having trouble seeing things as well as I did with the old -2.00. I finally had enough and went to another doctor; I explained the situation and he told me that hed do whatever he could to try to help me. He even went so far as to make me take out my lenses and walk around for an hour without them in so he could examine my eyes fresh. He spent about twenty minutes playing around with different eye tests and told me that my eyes had changed a little over the past few years but the -2.00 in both eyes would give me the best vision possible. I wouldnt have perfect vision but I wouldnt have problems with blurry spots when viewing things up close.
You might be wondering why I added all that this to this review - simply put - it is extremely important to get your eyes examined by a qualified professional. The first doctor that I went to was a registered optometrist but I honestly feel that she has way too many patience to be able to give them all the time that they need. The second doctor that I went to wasnt overbooked or juggling people - and he charged me $20.00 less than the first doc. He also urged me to go back to the first doc and tell her that I went to see another optometrist and he recommended that I stick with the -2.00 in both eyes and that this strength eliminated the blurred spots and inability to read things up close. Honestly, I am still ticked at her so I think I am going to let the situation cool off a little before I go back to her. No matter what a doctor says, if you feel that your prescription isnt correct and he or she wont take the time to reexamine you, seek a consultation from another doctor.
Johnson & Johnson Acuvue 2 Contact Lenses
When the second doctor fitted me with my new prescription lenses [which was my old -2.00 strength] he gave me a ton of free samples from a lot of different companies. The pair that he suggested I start with was Johnson & Johnsons Acuvue 2 [a clear pair as well as a colored pair]; Id worn the standard Acuvue lenses in the past and never had any problems with them so I was curious to see how the second ones would work out. Since I get bad calcium deposits on my lenses no matter how careful I am with them, I need disposable ones so that I dont ruin standard lenses. After wearing these for a few weeks I can say that they are nice lenses that give you virtually no problems but if you are someone that likes to wear them continuously, these arent the best pick. You can wear these for two weeks but you have to take them out before you go to bed however if you want continuous wear you can get six nights of them before they need to be replaced with another pair. I tried sleeping in these for a few nights and woke up feeling like I had kitty litter in my eyes. This might not be the case for everyone but for me these were much better to wear during the day and then take them out at night then for non stop wear.
These lenses are easy to put in and dont flip flop around when you have them on the tip of your finger. Johnson & Johnson made things a little easier by having an inside out mark stamped on the lenses; when you take them out of the blister pack to insert them you will see a small 1-2-3 on the side of the lens, if you can read it correctly then you know that you have the lens in the correct position to insert them. These have a visible tint to them so if you drop them they are easy to spot; this is part of the UV protection that they pimp out. This does help your eyes from being exposed to potentially harmful UV rays but it isnt something that is going to protect your entire eye so if you are out in the sun, snowboarding or hiking you will need added protection for the rest of your eye. These are comfortable to wear for extended periods of time but as I said, when I tried to sleep in them my eyes were extremely sore the next day.
Eye Time
Some people are under the misconception that you can wear these for two weeks non-stop; thats just not the case. These are designed to give you up to two weeks of wear before they start to feel dry, scratchy or uncomfortable but you can wear them for up to six days non-stop before you start to feel eye fatigue. These would be a great pick for someone that wears contact lenses occasionally or wears glasses but wants the ability to wear lenses from time to time. It might just be my eyes but when I tried to sleep in them my eyes were sore as hell the next day and I had to take them out and let them soak for a while.
Try Them Free!
If these lenses sound like something that you might want to try out, visit the Johnson & Johnson [www.jnjvision.com] site and fill out the coupon to receive a certificate for a free trial pair. You can take this to your optometrist to get a free trial pair to see if they are something that you are going to be able to wear comfortably. If your optometrist gives you a hassle about this then find another eye doctor to deal with. They get tons of free samples / trial pairs to hand out to people so dont let them hand you a line about them not having them. At the site youll also be able to find local stores and offices where you can get these - if your doctor is listed there and tries to tell you that he or she doesnt have any, contact J&J to let them know that something fishy is going on.
The Bottom Line
I still have a couple of other pairs of lenses to try out before I have to make a decision on which lens to order. I really like the way that these feel and both the clear and colored ones are easy to insert, give me a good field of vision and are thick. I hate having to wear thinner lenses because the rip easily, flip over when you are trying to put them in and if you drop them they start to dry up almost immediately and the edges will stick together by time you find the pesky little lens. My optometrist sells the clear ones for $18.00 a box [three pair / six lenses] and the colored ones for a dollar more. Since he said that I could stick with the -2.00 in both eyes I dont have to order or buy two boxes so I can switch lenses when ever I want. Im not sure if I am going to go with the Acuvue 2 as my permanent lens or not, I worn both pair that he gave me and have no real complaints outside of not being able to wear them overnight. You might try these and not have any problem wearing them for six nights in a row so dont be afraid give them a try. Thats why Johnson & Johnson offers you the free pair to try out!
As always, thanks for the read!
