My assignment this trip was to work the Council for Exceptional Children Conference in Boston. I had volunteered for this junket primarily because I taught special needs children but also because I had never been to Boston and wanted to see the city. While I also had to work in a drive and training in Stratford, Connecticut, I was anxious knowing that I would be driving in the worse driving city in America.
The trip from the airport was very eventful as map quest instructions were totally wrong and I went on an undesired tour of the city trying to find the Jury hotel. After going into Beacon Hill and Chelsea, seeing the bay and the Charles River, driving into Cambridge, I finally found the Back Bay with its signature Prudential and John Hancock towers. And there, at the corner of Berkley and Stuart Streets, in the former police headquarters is the luxurious Jurys Boston Hotel. I was greeted by a tall blond man who could have been a linebacker for the Patriots. His French accent was charming and he was very helpful. He was the head doorman and was a native of Quebec. The valets were very attentive even going and retrieving my phone from the car.
The interior of the hotel was elegant. The entrance floor was a mezzanine with a stairway leading up to the main floor or down to the Irish Pub and restaurant. The wall beside the stairway flowed with a waterfall some of which occasionally trickled onto the translucent steps. There were formal setting rooms on the main floor along with a business center, meeting rooms and rest rooms. The registration desk is tucked into the back passed the elevators. Here I was warmly welcomed by a male and female desk clerk both of whom were from Ireland, the land of many of my ancestors. I checked in and went upstairs.
The room was actually a bit more spacious than I thought it would be, but obviously not as large as some of the more commercial American hotels. But the bathrooms, now that was luxury! All the motifs are either Irish (it is Irish owned) or having to do with police.
The first night I was there, I had a street view. Being in the Back Bay is ok for the location, but nothing provides a view of the bay or river unless you are in the towers. A block down was the magnificent John Hancock Tower. About six blocks over was the Prudential Tower and Hynes Convention Center, the site of the conference.
Kathy and I quickly convened in the dining hall downstairs and had a delicious, very expensive meal. Back in the room, I relaxed watching television. The rooms also provide PPV movies and a host of television stations. Room service is also available although I did not use it.
The hotel is a very quick walk to many wonderful historic sites. Maggiano’s and other restaurants are just a couple blocks away. About five blocks away is Boston Commons and the Old Town Trolley Tours store. A quick cab ride is Fenway Park. But that is another story. Back to the hotel.
Jury’s Boston Hotel also offers a breakfast buffet and menu ordering for all three meals. There is also turn down service with wonderful chocolates left on the pillow. The toiletries are nice. The room also has a bathrobe (that you can purchase), plenty of towels, and a very comfortable bed. There is internet service in the rooms. And the hospitality! Wow, what a winner. I loved being there and just imagined being treated like that all the time. Can I just move in? Oh, but the price. Ugh.
The room cost the company $225 per night and I think that might have been discounted for the conference. I did overhear the desk clerk telling someone that their room would be $400 + a night which I was standing at the desk. Hotels in Boston are very expensive. But they definitely treat you on equal par with the price that is paid. And while you are forking over money, know that parking will set you back $39 per day for valet. Breakfast will run you about $25 and your lunch and evening meals there can run $40. But there are many restaurants within walking distance. But Boston is an expensive city, so go prepared. If you can afford to do so, however, you must stay in this hotel. It is one luxury you just must experience once in your life. Hats off to the good folks at Jurys Boston Hotel.
