| edmaidel's Full Review: KitchenAid Can Opener With Black Handle |
Can openers are certainly nothing special: for years, I've used a "Swing-Away" manual can opener, believing (quite mistakenly) that it was the best available, and the things I didn't like about it, were just that much worse on every one else's units. I didn't care for the fact that, more often than not, after puncturing a can, and turning the handle for a bit, the opener often fell off the can. I also disliked the fact that, more often than not, when arriving back to the point of initial puncture, the cut wasn't either aligned or sharp or deep enough to cause the top of the can to come completely loose, resulting in the need for some annoying bending and flexing to get a dangerously sharp metal top off a can. Finally, while I myself had little trouble pertaining to this aspect, my wife found turning the handle difficult, and often requested that I, and not she, open a can with the device.
On a trip to a friend's house last spring, I noticed that she had a Kitchen Aid opener, and when I used it to open a bunch of assorted sized cans, I was quite surprised at how well it worked, and far more significantly, how much easier it was to use than anything else I'd ever tried.
Fast forward a few months, and here I've purchased the item for myself, and am all but astounded at how well, and how easily the unit works. It punctures the metal lid cleanly and deeply, and the effort to turn the handle/crank is minimal. It cuts an even swath around the lid of the can, thus making removal of the now all but perfectly circular top a snap. Best of all, it's all but effortless to use.
All can openers also need to be cleaned regularly, to eliminate build-up of "gunk" around the two cutting blades. Don't ask me why, but performing that task on this device seems to be a bit easier than on others, and now that I've had it for several months, there isn't a trace of rust, or any other kind of deterioration anywhere.
So then, what more could you ask for? This device is so good at what it does, and so easy to use as well, that it all but negates the need for an electric can opener - even for those with arthritis in their fingers and hands. That's saying a lot, but then this product is that good. So go out and buy one for krissakes! What are you waiting for?
