Out of all the snack items I purchase, I simply can't keep Kraft Handi Snacks Ritz Crackers N Cheez on hand. As quickly as I buy them they get eaten up. The culprits are my kids... and my husband. He loves Handi Snacks as much as the kids do, or maybe even more. He even named his favorite hunting spot Handi Snack ridge, since he eats Handi Snacks while waiting there. Ritz crackers are also a favorite in our household, so it stands to reason that this snack would be doubly desirable.
I try to keep a variety of snack foods around the house at any given time. Most of these are fresh fruit, vegetable sticks, and cheese sticks but the family likes the occasional cracker or chip type snack as well. Handi Snacks Ritz Crackers N Cheez fits this bill quite nicely.
Analysis of the nutritional information reflects some concerns - the amount of sodium, the fact this contains saturated fat, and the fact that fully half of the calories of one pack are from fat.
This snack does contain Vitamin A 2%, Calcium 6%, and Iron 2%.
Still and all, eaten in appropriate amounts, this is a reasonable snack nutritionally at 100 calories, noting that one pack is enough to satisfy the appetite. There are far worse snack foods out there.
My concerns regarding the ingredients are centered primarily on the high fructose corn syrup. I am trying to eliminate as much of this ingredient as possible in the foods we eat. Specifically for me, whenever I eat anything that contains it I get heartburn. So I don't eat these snacks. I like the fact this snack food contains real cheddar cheese.
Since my family loves them, however, I will continue to purchase them and caution that they don't over do them.
Overall Thoughts
Part of the appeal of Handi Snacks are that they are well, handy. They are easy to eat with no mess and no cleanup; just toss the empty package into the trash. They are portable and I have not had any packages break open when taking them on day excursions or camping trips.
Cost-wise they are generally pretty reasonable. I prefer to buy them when they are on sale as I do with most products, considering the high cost of groceries these days. I prefer to purchase the 12 pack as they last a couple days longer but most of the time I can only find the six pack (we have a very small grocery store in the small town we live near.)
A six pack of these lasts a couple of days in our home, with each daughter and my husband eating one pack a day. They will actually hide them in the pantry to make sure they get their fix.
