I have handled many types of bike locks but the Kryptonite Kryptolock tops them all. The Kryptolock is in the right price range for me, a college student commuting in a city with a somewhat high crime rate. The hardened carbon alloy feels indestructible and the locking mechanism is solid. The $1000 anti-theft guarantee is also a nice addition to the inexpensive security device that no cyclist should be without.
Compared to other models of locks in the same price range, the Kryptolock has the best quality and durability. Something as simple as how the crossbar attatches to the U, the size of the U, and the placement of the lock can make a large difference. Locks where the U simply inserts and clicks into the crossbar are easily pryed apart. The Kryptolock has a hooked end to secure it inside the crossbar, and the key must be turned to lock the other end of the U into the bar. This securely keeps the lock together, preventing any prying. The lock itself uses a cylindrical key which is difficult to pick, and impossible to copy. Locks in the same price range that use basic keys are easily picked
I attend a college made up largely of commuters. Large portions of commuters ride their bikes to campus. I have found many locks attached to racks with no bike or just the front wheel. Most of the time, this means that the bike was stolen due to the cyclist improperly securing the bike to the rack. I have also heard many reports of chain locks being cut and low quality u-locks being pried open. For the past two years, my Kryptolock has proven itself to keep my bike attached to the bike-rack or street signpost where I left it.
Nothing is perfect so I had to find at least one flaw with the Kryptolock. I could find none, but I thought I would point out a drawback to U-locks in general. They are heavy. If you are not locking your bike up in areas where theft is possible, a lightweight coil or chain lock will probably do the trick. If you feel a U-lock is necessary, then I would highly recommend the Kryptolock for its durability and low cost.
