Pros: Peace of mind, top notch bike security
Cons: Heavy, need a big pack to haul it in
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this for anyone who has to lock up a bike out of site, even occasionally.

| teamfreak16's Full Review: Kryptonite NY Chain with EV Disc Lock |
As fate would have it, I had never put much thought into a bike lock. I bought an affordable one, and locked my bike up when needed. Bad move on my part. After my Rockhopper FSR 2000 was stolen from under my very nose, in a place I trusted, I began to put more thought into it.
I purchased a Gary Fisher Sugar 4 as a replacement, and determined to keep this bike around, began searching for a good lock. A friend turned me onto the Kryptonite New York Lock, and it was practically love at first site. I paid roughly $80.00 for mine, and it was worth every penny.
I got a few details about this lock off of the Kryptonite website.
The chain itself consists of four-sided chain links made of triple heat-treated boron manganese steel for maximum strength . Because of the shape of the chain, this lock defies bolt cutters, saws, chisels, hammers and files. And because the inside of the links are narrow, the thief cannot use a crowbar or other object as leverage to jimmy apart.
The lock portion also defies bolt cutters, saws, hammers and chisels. It is made from 1/2" (13mm) Kryptonium Steel(TM) shackle . The lock portion is able to withstand over 10,000 pounds of pull force and 20,000 pounds of cut force. Kryptonite has also thrown in some added design features, such as their Bent foot(TM)design and a pivoting shackle to add strength and flexibility. The locking mechanism features a 7-pin, pick-and-drill resistant, tubular locking mechanism. It is also vinyl-coated and weatherproof.
Add to this the fact that you can purchase anti-theft protecion along with this lock, and it becomes obvious that any bike owner can use this lock.
On days I commute, it's worth it to me to have to carry it in a backpack rather than ride with my Camelback. (A possible con might be that it does not fit into my Camelback MULE.) As an added bonus, although its heavy, the extra weight can help your training regimen as well. I found that my climbing abilities improved after lugging this lock back and forth from home to work.
I can now leave the bike locked and out of site without worrying that someone is going to steal it. Considering it would cost over a grand to replace either my Mountain or Road bikes, the peace of mind alone is worth it to me. Recommended. Highly.
Update 09/15/04 Word on the bike forums is that Kryptonite locks with a cylinder key can be opened with a Bic Pen. One poster on the forum posted that after modifying his Bic Pen with a screwdriver, he was able to pick the New York Lock in twenty seconds....http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=66128&page=8&pp=25&highlight=kryptonite ..... at this time I would recommend contacting Kryptonite before purchasing any Kryptonite lock.
Update 10/01/2004 - Kryptonite is making good on their promise to exchange locks with round keys to something better. You can register your lock for the upcoming exchange on the Kryptonite website. I've registered mine. Due to the fact that they are planning on replacing the lock with a better one, and the quality of the chain of this lock, I still recommend the NY Bike Lock. I don't recommend buying one with a round key, however.
Update 06/29/2005 - Kryptonite has made good on their lock exchange, replacing my lock with one that cannot be picked by a Bic pen. I am satisfied with the exchange and quality of the lock.
