| Freak369's Full Review: LEGO Space Port Accessories |
No matter how careful you are with your Lego bits, bricks, pieces and elements eventually there comes a time when you need to break down and invest in some replacement pieces. Weve had a lot of our Space sets for years now and some of them are on their last leg. The metallic pieces, no matter how carefully handled, eventually faded, chipped, cracked or started to peel. The shuttle doors came off their hinges, Space Port logos were scratched and some of the tools were missing or had been used for other Lego sets. Being a regular visitor to the Lego website, Id seen the various accessory packs advertised in the past but almost always opted to pick up the pieces I needed from various brick vendors. Seeing as how some of these pieces are getting scarce I decided to break down and order a few of the Space Port Accessory packs to have on hand when or if they are needed in the future.
What You Get
Since this is a supplement or accessory pack, it will contain some of the most common pieces for space related sets. The two stenciled bricks carry the Space Port design [one flat, on 2x1] but can be used with pretty much any Lego Space themed set. The larger pieces include an over-the-head astronaut head gear system ad well as a jet pack / oxygen pack. Both of these can be used on any of the Lego mini figures but you will need to remove hats, caps and some types of hair elements before the head gear can be properly affixed. The metallic visors that come with this set are nice and can be attached to almost any style helmet that has the side prongs on it; these include any from the Racers, Space, Castle and Ninja series. These require a little bit of gentle handling since oil from your fingers will wear off the glossy sheen and lets face it, they do scratch easily. You can coat these with a clear sealer but clear nail polish works just as well providing that you give it adequate time to dry and harden.
Oddly enough you get only one full face helmet, two visors but one helmet does that seem strange to anyone else? You do get some nice tools like the ever popular mine sweeper, wrench and a set of walkie-talkies. These are multi purpose type Lego items that can be used with a lot of different sets and series. The odds and ends include a nice vented yellow piece [great for adding to the sides of space vehicles], transparent yellow rover disc, standard sized pole [can be used for flags, directional signs and road signs etc] and two blank sign pieces that can be used on the pole or attached to vehicles, ships, building or structures. Since these are blank you can use them for a variety of things or invest in some of the Lego stickers [in other accessory packs] to make your own. Another option is to purchase some clear address labels [or full sheets] and print up your own!
Things To Know
• This is strictly an accessory pack, dont pick this up or order it thinking that it is a full set. Toss this at a kid and it might entertain them for about two minutes. This set is meant as an add on or supplemental set, not a standard building set.
• There are some small and fragile pieces in this set so make sure that smaller kids dont have access to them and that the older kids know to store these out of reach of the wee people. The age recommendation is only there as a guide, not a steadfast rule.
The Bottom Line
This is a pretty good accessory pack for those who are into any of the Space series from Lego. You arent going to get a huge selection of pieces so make sure that you are going to make good use of at least half the piece. If you have some older sets and are missing some pieces, you can order this directly from the Lego World Shop for $2.99 plus shipping and handling [look for special offers regarding free shipping]. As much as I hate to say this [being a Lego lover and all], if you think you are only going to use a few of these pieces you are better off contacting one of the many brick brokers to pick up odds and ends. In some cases they will even offer to swap pieces with you if you have something they really want [check out their want pages first]. Still, this is a real bargain for $2.99; you get some nice pieces and a few that were exclusives to the Space themed sets.
