So, I'm not lying. I refuse to lie about my age. But here’s the thing: I am not old enough to be 30.
Nope. No siree Bobbette, I am simply not old enough.
I look at myself in the mirror and I still see a fresh-faced young gal (25, tops) who very closely resembles the model for Renoir’s Woman Reading (see bio-pic). I still have freckles, for pete’s sake. I get carded buying beer and Cakebread Cellars’ 㥧 Reserve Chardonnay. Put my hair in a ponytail and no way any by-the-book convenience store clerk would sell me cigarettes (if I wanted them). There is no possible way I can be 30 years old. It’s simply inconceivable.

I had a lovely facial recently. The wonderful lady who presided over that most personal of beauty rituals told me I had the skin of an 18 year old, God love her, and she asked me my secret. It’s very simple, really, avoid the sun whenever possible, and use Lancôme’s Bienfait Total UV with SPF 15 religiously. Nary a morning passes but Lancôme’s miracle product smoothes over my ocular nodes.
Well, to get technical, you really should keep it away from the tender parts of your ocular nodes (your eyes), as the active ingredients (octocrylene, octyl salicylate and avobenzone) tend to sting a bit, but the rest of your face will thank you for using this product. I apply a thin coat to my face and neck, about 3 squirts from the 3.4 ounce bottle, allow a few minutes to dry, and proceed with my normal makeup routine. Et vóila, my face is protected from casual sun exposure for the rest of the day.

Casual sun exposure = taking out the trash, getting the mail, going to and from the car at work, daycare, the grocery store, driving, etc…all the little bits of UVA/UVB exposure we usually forget about when calculating the amount of time we’ve spent in the sun. Five minutes here and ten minutes there add up after a full day of average life, and protection from the aggregate injury these many little exposures do is paramount to younger, healthier skin. Aging itself causes enough loss of elasticity, why add to that with continual radiation? Especially when Lancôme offers such a quick and easy solution.
Moisturizer and sun protectant rolled into one, the product is available both in pots and in pumps. I prefer the pump jar because it allows me to measure out how much I need on a consistent basis. The pump jars come in two sizes: the 3.4 ounce I usually purchase (for roughly $60.00 US) and a 1.7 ounce retailing for around $36.00 US. I re-purchase roughly once every 5-6 months.

I was also diagnosed with sensitive skin within the last year, and believe me, it’s not as romantic as it sounds. I can no longer use any number of products I’ve always used on my face. I have to buy special soap that no one else in the family uses, and I’ve had to get pickier about my makeup, but I’ve had no problem with Bienfait Total. The product is not marketed as being ideal for sensitive skin, but this consumer’s experience has been ideal. I don’t break out; I don’t get scaly skin. No unexplained red patches a lá Stephen King’s Dreamcatcher appear to torment me and my fellow humans. Lancôme’s product is a little pricey on the “husband’s scale of frivolity,” but my very sensitive skin endorses it wholeheartedly.

The lotion isn’t meant to protect your face from the vagaries of sailing or a nomadic life in the Mojave Desert. If you’re a paleontologist out looking for a brand new dinosaur to name after yourself, then you probably want something stronger - but Lancôme’s Bienfait Total UV with SPF 15 is a perfect remedy for the damage wrought by average daily sun exposure in an average woman’s life. Use it daily, and you too might be asked for ID when buying the cognac for your next dinner party. And what one of us (those of us who are of age anyway) doesn’t appreciate that?
