Gotta make a move to a town that's right for me
So, there I was one Sunday spending a little down time in front of the TV instead of the computer, and I ran across this interesting show on TLC. I find most of the programming on TLC interesting (my current favorite being Trading Spaces), but this was slightly different. It was called Buy-ology.
The show covered a study of people's buying habits, both in the U.S. and in Great Britain. Among other things, the study posits that the trend in lipstick sales is a reliable indicator of economic growth or recession.
Yep, lipstick sales.
Lipsticks, it seems, are generally considered an indulgence. As salaries increase and people feel more confident about their futures, they set their luxury sights a little higher than a tube of Glamorous Gold. But as times become more troubled, sales rise - because women tend to view lip color as a more affordable luxury. Lipstick sales have been on the rise for several months now.
Town to keep me movin', Keep me groovin' with some energy
I've done my bit for science: I've purchased dozens of tubes of Rendezvous Red, or Pink Pomegranate (well, not so much pink), or Buster's Brown Bunting, or any one of hundreds of other colors. Lipstick, with all its various shapes and colors, is probably the most affordable little pick-me-up a woman can buy. A new lipstick can change a mood, change an image, change a very life (for the day, anyway), and do so all for around $20.00 a pop.
Well, I talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about it, Talk about it
My particular indulgence is Lancôme's Rouge Sensation, which usually sells for US $21.00 per tube. And my color of choice, at least for today, is Raisinette (with a "pearl" type finish). The color is rich and glossy for hours, feeling almost decadent on my lips. It's a lovely sort of reddish metallic bronze, darkish without being vampiric, and even a bit translucent, smoothing on more like a gloss than a full-coverage lipstick. It's perfect for me during the holiday workdays, and translates well into an evening shade if I apply a foundation first.
Not only is the color fabuliscious, Rouge Sensation wears better than many other lipcolors I've tried. After checking the website I discovered that the lipstick is specially formulated for longer wear. This is one of the few products of its type that keeps that long-wearing promise. I apply in the morning and am off to work, drink pots of coffee all morning long, reapply just after lunch, and am good for the remainder of the afternoon.
Talk about, Talk about, Talk about movin'
Lancôme also indicates that they've enriched the products with emollients to "soften and smooth" lips. I can't say if the emollients make my lips any softer than they would otherwise have been, but the color doesn't dry and flake the way other long lasting lipsticks do - with one limited exception. While I feel Rouge Sensation is an overall superior product, the matte shades are more prone to flaking than the pearl and cream shades. Still, even the matte shades beat most other products (including another Lancôme long-lasting line) in terms of moisture level.
And, big bonus here, it doesn't smell. Maybe it's just me, but I've purchased some lipsticks that radiated the most atrocious odors. I think manufacturers usually add scents to make the product more appealing, but the smell (like the fake watermelon scent used in bubble gum) just puts me right off. There is a small con, and that's that the pearl finish colors will occasionally feather. I'm not entirely certain of why, as it doesn't do this with every use, but I've found that using a lip pencil helps considerably. One might also give MAC's "Blotting Powder" a go, as a little dose of this before application of liner or color works wonders.
On the whole, I'm quite happy with Rouge Sensation, and have purchased dozens of tubes in varying colors. I recommend it quite enthusiastically, particularly to those seeking an affordable yet delicious indulgence.
Gotta move on. Gotta move on. Gotta move on.
I've looked for a list of ingredients, but have been unable to locate one thus far. If anyone knows where one can be found, please email me or leave a comment here and let me know. Rouge Sensation is currently available in more than 50 shades encompassing the following color groups: Red-Orange-Yellow, Beige-Brown, and Pink-Rose-Violet. Finishes include the established shiny pearls and rich creams, with the company just introducing a line of "Velvet Mattes."
Won't you take me to Funkytown. Won't you take me to Funkytown.
An excellent, long-lasting lip color for the money (priced at US $21.00 per tube), the lipsticks are available at better department stores, or may be purchased direct from the company at www.lancome.com.
