| Landscaper's Full Review: Landscaper Tough Round Point Shovel |
My model of the Ames Landscapers shovel is a bit different... it doesn't have the "D" handle, but instead sports a standard end (with green plastic cover). Nice shovel.
This is a favorite of mine. I use a shovel daily (in fact, SEVERAL shovels daily), and this is the best one I've used. Solid, wood handled, heavy. A great tool.
Solid
This is a real shovel. One that you can stomp on in hard ground and it's not going to crack on you. It does wonderfully digging out rocks, clay, sand, just about anything you want to shovel up. It's never felt flimsy, and the attachment to the handle has never loosened up... even with quite a bit of heavy work.
Wood Handle
I'm a bit of a traditionalist, but I like the feel of a good solid wood handle on my shovels. Ames uses a great one. Just the right diameter and well fitted to the blade. I've tried many fiberglass handled shovels, and every one of them has developed a loose fitting between the handle and the blade within a few months. A personal peeve of mine, but I really don't like loose handles on my tools. After two years of almost daily use, my first Ames Landscaper shovel is still solid.
Heavy
Not necessarily a good thing to say about a hand tool, but the feel of this shovel is wonderful. When you pick it up, it's a little heavier than some garden shovels, but that's because the blade is made from stout steel, the handle is solid, and everything is put together well. A joy to use (if you enjoy shovel work, that is).
Overall a great tool. Well balanced, well built, solid. My favorite shovel. In fact, when I needed to replace another shovel, I searched town to find another Ames Landscaper. And I was disappointed when the seed store only had one left! Sadness.
If you're looking for a great shovel, and dislike the flimsy feel of many shovels out there, take the time and search out the Ames Landscaper. You won't be disappointed.
