Pros: Beautiful property with an intimate and inviting ambiance! Wonderful pools, a lovely beach setting.
Cons: You will play Roulette with the rooms and views.
The French make no guarantees.
The Bottom Line: Recommended if you can get the right room, with the right view. The spa, pools and beach setting are wonderful. An intimate and inviting hotel, isolated from spring-break Cancun.

| tpbus's Full Review: Le Meridien Cancun Resort & Spa |
Cancun is high on my repetitive vacation destination list.
Many feel it is too commercial, but for my wife and I, Cancun represents an easily accessible, affordable, foreign destination, with the spice of Mexico and the charm of the Caribbean, combined with all the amenities and comforts of the U.S. We have probably visited a half dozen times for long weekends. The water and the beaches are beautiful, the fine restaurants numerous, and the variety and quality of the hotels cover a broad spectrum.
We stayed at Le Meridien in Cancun in the summer of 2002, after finding a good deal on the net. I write this review, at this time, because we are planning our next little excursion to Mexico's Caribbean Jewel, and I was naturally thinking about our latest experience.
Le Meridien is on the small side, which for me is a big positive. You won't have to worry about spring-breakers in this hotel. There is a beautiful spa and workout room. The hotel is very pleasing from an architectural standpoint; it looks like it belongs on the beach in the Caribbean. You can see the sea from the beautiful pools, restaurants, and from many of the guest rooms. This last point is an important point, because when going to Cancun, having a view of the ocean from your room is a must!
When we checked in, I made the mistake of assuming that all rooms had good views, since every 4-5 star hotel that I have stayed in Cancun had a view of the sea. This is not the case with Le Meridien. I should have known something could be wrong when I saw a New Yorker in the lobby crying about having reserved a room with a balcony. When we got to our room, we were on a low floor, and when we opened the curtains, we had a view of the tennis courts! Now it was one of the prettiest tennis courts that I have seen, but not what I want to see on the beach. We could not change rooms until the next day. After I woke up to the sound of rackets hitting tennis balls, we managed to get a high floor room facing the beach, but with no balcony. The room was very nice, and compared to our tennis court view, a huge upgrade! You should note when booking at Le Meridien that only deluxe rooms have balconies, but even those can be with restricted views or views of the lagoon. This, in my opinion, is a design flaw with this property. With regard to views, you either have one or you don't, but you will probably pay the same price.
The restaurant by the pool and beach, Le Saint Trop', had a beautiful view and the food was very good. I recommend it for lunch, even if you are staying elsewhere. The breakfast was good, but pricey. We tried breakfast at the Ritz-Carlton next door, and it was even pricier with a restricted view. For me, I want to see the sea!
The lobby lounge, Le RendezVous, was very inviting. We had a good time with the bartender and waiters. The main restaurant service was excellent; the food was good. But let's face it, I have my favorite restaurants in Cancun, and few are in hotels.
Now, as I plan this trip, my decision on Le Meridien is at an impasse. I would love to stay there again, but refuse to stay there unless I can get a room with the right view.
Unless you book a suite, I have not found a way to get any guarantees of an ocean view. If/when I do, I will update my review. If I cannot find a way, I will be posting a review about a different Cancun hotel. Le Meridien is a wonderful property, but I refuse to play Roulette with my vacation!
