| marybatson's Full Review: LeapFrog Toys LeapPad: LeapStart Pre-Math - "Lots ... |
My son received a LeapPad for Christmas, and a few additional books to go with it. His LeapPad included two books, which are short excerpts from the LeapPad library. These books are terrific introductions to the system, but certainly dont entertain a child for long. Additional books are necessary, and Im pleased with the Lots and Lots of Honeypots book.
What is a LeapPad?
For those not familiar with a LeapPad, its a battery-operated toy with a speaker, and a wand. By placing a LeapPad book on the reader, a child can hear a story, play games, and learn. The books are specially designed for different LeapPad systems, and have sturdy pages with spiral bindings. The books range in subject from phonics, reading, math, science, geography, foreign languages, to music.
About Lots and Lots of Honeypots:
LeapPad books range in level from preschool to 5th grade. Lots and Lots of Honeypots is geared to preschool and kindergarten aged children. It focuses on pre-math skills: counting to 10, in addition to numbers, shapes, and color recognition. Winnie the Pooh, and his lovable chums from the Hundred Acre Wood are featured. The images are colorful, and typical of the Disney style illustrations. This 22-page book is compatible with the original LeapPad, LeapPad Plus Microphone, LeapPad Plus Writing, and the Quantum LeapPad Learning System.
The Story
Some of the friends from the Hundred Acre Wood are donating their things to the needy. Pooh searches his house and decided to give lots and lots of honeypots.
The Games
The activities vary from page to page and mostly focus on number recognition, counting up to 10, color recognition, and shape identification. There are musical games, number searches, and matching activities.

Our Experience:
Lots and Lots of Honeypots was one of the first LeapPad books William received, so its clocked in a good many hours of play. The story is straightforward, and easy for young preschoolers to grasp. Although, its the games that really occupy my boy. Theres loads of praise for the right answers, and a repeat of the question when answered incorrectly. I like this aspect of play, as it encourages learning. The activities challenge children to listen to instruction, recognize items, and follow through by touching the pictures on the pages.
Its difficult to get a 3-year old to listen for any great length of time, but this toy promotes listening, and focus. That alone deserves a decent rating from me. I recommend this book for children 3 and up, but caution parents that it may require some supervision. The GO button must be touched every time you turn the page, so the LeapPad can identify the page. This alone may cause frustration. The pages are sturdy; yet, little ones may get over anxious and crinkle the pages, or worse, tare them off the binding. Ive repaired a few pages with tape, but its not desirable.
I dont have any complaints about Lots and Lots of Honeypots; however, Ive discerned over 6-months time that these books are mastered quickly. If there were more pages per books with progressive learning I wouldnt cringe at the $14.99 price tag. Ive resorted to purchasing LeapPad books at half price, or off eBay. Overall, Im satisfied with the content of this book. I recommend it for young children who havent mastered counting to 10, or number recognition.
