This is a must have for any child. It will keep your child interested for longer than most toys. Better yet use it with your child and see an even bigger difference.
This Leap Pad is an interactive educational toy. It is the size of a notebook and has a special pen attached to it. You buy books with special cartridges to go with it. The extra books cost $19.95 in most stores. You plug the cartridge in and place the book in the open notebook then you press the on button and away the child goes. For parents who like quiet there is a volume control on it unlike most toys these days.
For anyone who hasn't seen this amazing toy it works like this. Once the cartridge and book are in place a voice explains plainly how to operate it. The child takes the attached pen and places it over any picture or word on the page and the voice reads the word or explains the picture. You can select different modes and it will read the words, spell the words, or sound out the words. There are then educational games that can be played. It seems like there is a different game about every other page.
My 5 year old and 3 year old love it. My 1 year old recently discovered and although doesn't understand loves the fact that when he moves the pen it talks to him. It reads to them when I sometimes can't. There are games for them to play as well. My 5 year is learning how to read and loves it because it helps him learn new words. I bought it at Christmas time and it is the one toy that hasn't been broken or sent to the bottom of the toy box.
I would recommend this to any parent for its educational value alone. I have to say that it isn't perfect. It would be nice if there was some sort of binder for the books and cartridges when they are not being used. The pen cord can get frayed with a lot of use and mine seems to be on constantly. Mine still works but it is on its last leg and I still haven't found out a way to have it replaced when it does die. Other than those two things I haven't had any other problems with it.
