Pros: Colorful, Great Subject Matter For Babies And Toddlers
Cons: Cannot Be Turned Off, Does Not Attract My Sons Attention
The Bottom Line: I'm torn on my final recommendation. While I like the subject matter, the toy failed to get attention from my son... How Do You Think Your Child Will React?
susieq112's Full Review: Leapfrog Tad's First Feelings Book
During my sons first Christmas he received his first real onslaught of toys. He wound up with about 6 from Santa (Mom & Dad) and then another large grouping from Grandma and Grandpa. At 7 months old it was a great opportunity to start building his toy collection. One of his little presents from us was the Tads First Feelings Book.
About This Toy Or Book
This toy is for babies 6 months and older. It is made up like a book and also somewhat like a stuffed toy. The main body is supposed to be "Tad," one of the LeapFrog characters. The book part of his body looks like a bib under his chin and extending down and at the bottom is a music button and an On/Off switch. His head is a soft "felt" like material, his hands are made of corduroy and his main body and the pages are a slick easy to clean polyester.
As you flip up the pages Tads expressions change depending on his mood. In other words one side of the bib features the wording and pictures and then each bib piece (3 total) flips over the original Tad face, which changes Tads look. The first page Tad is happy. Tad says he is happy and then a short song is played about being happy and feelings. Page two Tad is sad. Tad's face wears a frown and a song is played about being sad and feelings. On the last page Tad is sleepy and a song is sung.
The on/off button located on the bottom right side is somewhat useless. It does not need to be pushed to turn on the toy. Therefore if a page is flipped up or another button is pressed the toy plays even if you just hit the On/Off button.
The music button on the opposite side plays the "feelings" part of the song played on each page. It is a fairly short song, but changes depending on what page is flipped up.
The battery and volume controls are tucked away in the back of the toy secured by Velcro inside the toy. In all the months we have had this toy I have replaced the batteries once We have not used the toy that much however.
Our Experience
This little book/toy really hasnt seen a lot of action from my son. At the beginning he would take the time to listen to the pages and the songs, but as each month passed he cared less and less about this toy. At 20 months, he will not even play with it, if I encourage him. When my son was younger (when he first got the toy) he would smile, crumple the pages and also showed a fascination for the changing faces, but that all passed quickly.
The introduction to feelings is a great start, but I do not feel like this toy is engaging enough for younger children (toddlers in particular) to play with it. I thought this would be a good way to start him out on feelings, but he will not play with it, so it is pretty useless. While it has not been all bad - he has played with the toy on occasion, he will not spend the time to really listen and learn from the toy.
Overall the Tads First Feelings Book was pretty much a dud for us. It lacks the necessary attraction to babies and young toddlers and does not hold my sons attention at all now.
