In preparing to fly across the cross country with a 4-year old, I picked up a few new playthings in the hopes that they might make the flight tolerable. Since the LeapPad is a must-have travel toy, the discounted Mother Goose Songbook looked like it would make a good choice. My son loves music, but this book bores him. Now I know why it was half-price.
What is a LeapPad?
For those not familiar with a LeapPad, its a battery-operated toy with a speaker, and a wand. By placing a LeapPad book on the reader, a child can hear a story, play games, and learn. The books are specially designed for different LeapPad systems, and have sturdy pages with spiral bindings. The books range in subject from phonics, reading, math, science, geography, foreign languages, to music.
About the Mother Goose Songbook
The Mother Goose Songbook is targeted to young children, preschool through the 1st grade crowd. It focuses on musical activities, such as identifying notes, and learning note names. It also attempts to teach children to recognize lyrics, and instruments. This book features 14-different nursery rhyme, which are put to music. The pages exemplify the rhymes in songbook format with sheet music. The illustrations are classically styled, yet colorful, and quite charming. The 20-page book is compatible with the original LeapPad, LeapPad Plus Microphone, LeapPad Plus Writing, and the Quantum LeapPad Learning System.
Activities
The activities in the Mother Goose Songbook allow children to listen to the rhymes with, or without vocals. They can listen to one line at a time, or a song in its entirety. Instruments can be added to the melodies as well. The piano, the accordion, and the guitar have icons along with a trio of instruments, which includes the flute, the drums, and a trumpet. In addition, another icon will identify any note, and its length. The final page features a piano keyboard thats color-coded to play Mary Had a Little Lamb. The notes are colored, so kids touch the corresponding key to play the song.

Our Experience:
Id love to give the Mother Goose Songbook a high rating, because I think its fun, and educational; however, my son doesnt like it. He listened to the songs, and touched the illustrations exploring for funny sayings, but overall seemed disappointed. He played with it on the plane for 15-minutes, but then selected another book. During our travels, we spent a few days on the road driving to, and from Vermont. I thought for sure hed pop Mother Goose in the LeapPad, and Id hear nursery rhymes droning on, and on. It didnt happen once. Ive encouraged him to give it a go, but he always selects another book. In fact, I suggested he try the Mother Goose Songbook today, and he told me flatly that he didnt like it. I think this book would make an awesome gift for children who are learning to read, and play music. The interactive features reinforce learning especially in identifying notes; however, for those who arent musically inclined it may not amuse them as much as other LeapPad books.
