Gift for birthday number 3
About a month and a half ago my son celebrated his 3rd birthday and everyone knows that he is collecting Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway series. So, it was not much of a surprise that one of his relatives found this over the track signal for him and his trains. It was really neat to see him get another site/accessory to his trains and track and he was really excited to try this one out. As soon as we got home from celebrating at Chuck E Cheese that was one of the first boxes he wanted to open to start playing with it.   

Details about the Deluxe Over the Track Signal
This signal actually has two lanes of track at the base for two trains to go through this signal house at the same time. The signal is almost 6" across, 3" of track at the base, and the height is nearly 7". There are two switches at the top (one for each side). When the handle on the switch is down a stop sign drops down over the track and the red light comes on (that can be seen on both sides of the track). When the handle goes back up the stop sign goes up and the green light comes on signaling for trains to go (this light also can be seen on both sides of this station). Also, there are 4 different sounds that are made between the two switches. There is also a sound switch on the side of the top of the signal house if you are tired of the sounds, but the lights will still work either way. 

Battery requirements
This signal house requires 2 AA batteries for the sounds to work. Batteries are included when you buy this toy.

This costs $29.99 from Toys R Us. 

Age recommendation
This toy is recommended for children ages 3 and older. However, I do believe that some 2 year olds would be able to play with this toy with no problems. 

Durability
This signal house is built really sturdy. After a month and a half of a lot of play it still looks brand new. I suspect that it will look this good for awhile. 

Our experience
This signal house is very easy for my son to play with. He likes to do the switches and tell his trains when to stop and go. Since he knows the signs for stop and go he likes to tell the trains with american sign as well. Sometimes he mimics the sounds it makes too for extra effects.  

The only thing that is tricky about this piece is that it can be hard to build a track structure that can include this. There are no other straight pieces that are 3" long so fitting the piece within a layout is hard. Also, since the signal house has two lanes trying to get the track to fit into both lanes can be a difficult.  

Anytime my son sees this piece he pulls it out and asks if we can build some track to go with it. This is a favored piece within his collection. He may not be able to build a layout that works with it... but he sure loves it! 

Overall
This is a great piece to have with your collection. It will inspire you to keep adding places within your track layouts and your child will have a blast.
