I came across this set at K-Mart on the clearance shelf. It’s rare that you see Lego’s on sale – let alone on clearance. This is the first set of Rock Raiders I’ve purchased – and I probably wouldn’t have picked it up if I didn’t see all the great little accessories that come in this set. Don’t be fooled – this set can be easily adapted for use with any Lego set. The multitude of little pieces is amazing – this would be a great starter set for kids who are just being introduced to the fantastic world of Lego’s.
Rock Raiders
The Rock Raiders series had great potential but didn’t get a real push from Lego’s in their magazine or in the packaged inserts that came with other sets. The series didn’t really appeal to my kids or I so we never really bother to look at any of the boxes. It’s amazing the attention a box gets when they slap a neon yellow clearance sticker on it.
The Lego People
In this set you have five Lego people; with a variety of facial features, clothing, expressions and capabilities. The different body designs are simply great – from the colors – yellow, blues,, orange, brown and red – to the types of clothing - overalls, work suits and uniforms. The people can easily be taken apart and rebuilt to change the look – that isn’t limited to the pieces in this set.
The people are also outfitted with different visors ranging from clear yellow to basic gray. There are also a variety of hats, helmets and caps. I really have to mention the cool welding goggles and wrap around helmets – they are just too cool. It’s the little pieces in these smaller sets that really complete it – give it a realistic feel.
The Tools
In addition to the large rock cutter this set is loaded with tools. Here’s the run down – hammer, wrench, screwdriver, drill, welding gun and chock. They can be used by all the people in this set or kept organized by placing them on the tool rack / rock platform. Outside of the tools there’s also walkie-talkies and hidden gems. Yellow and green gems can be seen on the box but only a green one is enclosed.
When you open that package you will see a large gray wheel – look a little closer at it and you will see that this is the way the tools are packaged. This eliminates the small pieces from being tossed away with the bag. Pretty smart on Lego’s part but I admit – I completely overlooked it when I first opened it.
Outside the tools and people you get a break away rock – standard brown. Inside the rock there’s a prong for holding the gems. When I first saw this I thought … it’s just a rock but then I saw my kids playing with it. They built a small mountain and had the rock hidden inside it and used the rock cutter to drill though and find it. They also broke it apart and had the people carry it with the tools inside.
The rock cutter platform that holds the tools is pretty cool as well. It has two little levers that can be used to pull it or push it around – it’s very easy to assemble and pretty sturdy. With a few clear blocks from the Lego basic sets you can raise it up a little to give it some height instead of having it drag on the ground.
My kids loved this set because of the tools and great helmets. I think they have about four of these sets in play right now. The tools worked out great with the Star Wars sets in the docking bays. I really love these smaller sets; most of them have pieces you can’t find in the larger sets. I can’t say how much I love these types of sets – but my kids love them even more.
If you have a child that has expressed interest in Lego’s this is a great set to start him or her off on. And on the other hand – if you have a Lego-maniac I am sure that this set will be well received. In fact, when I brought the first set home my oldest son grabbed it and ran into the playroom shouting, “look at all the cool tools”.
