| uglybugg's Full Review: Levenger Set of 5 Book Bungees |
I love to read. I literally keep a book with me at all times in case I have some boring down time like waiting in line at the grocery store or for a medical appointment. The only problem with constantly toting books around with me is that my bookmarks have a tendency to fall out which totally defeats the purpose of using bookmarks. And if the book happens to be a paperback the cover and pages become damaged from bumbling around in my bag or from me shoving lots of stuff in said bag.
A few years back I found a great solution to that problem when I was purchasing a Thai Book Rest from Levenger.com.
Book Bungees are an amazingly simple concept that I'm surprised I didn't think of myself. They consist of a black piece of plastic that is 7" x 1.5" by about an eighth inch thick. A slot is cut about a half inch from the top of the plastic through which a flat piece of colorful elastic is threaded. The ends of the elastic are sewn together resulting in a loop of elastic. To use, simply place the plastic portion into the book either horizontally or vertically, then just wrap the elastic around the book's cover. The page is marked and the book is closed securely preventing potential damage to the cover and pages as well as preventing the bookmark from falling out.
I use Book Bungees all the time now and my books (and library books) stay in much better shape because they do not come open inside of my bag. Levenger states that Book Bungees fit any book up to 8W x 1D x 10H but I gave one to my husband for his college textbooks and they worked fine on those and even with his big fat CISSP book.
Book Bungees are pricey. The price put me off at first so I bought just one for $8 with my first order to see what they were all about. I have since ordered two of the sets of 5 Book Bungees for $30 as the set is more economical and they make a great gift when paired with a book or bookstore gift certificate. Everyone I have given them to is very pleased and bummed that they didn't think of the idea either. Each bungee is packaged inside a small plastic bag and then a small cardboard sleeve.
Book Bungees are available at Levenger.com or Levenger retail stores. A set of 5 is $30 and includes the following colors: forest green, cranberry, amber, eggplant and black. The date I wrote this review the website is showing some of them on sale for $4.95 for some reason so now might be a good time to try and buy.
Bottom Line
I love Book Bungees. Even though they are expensive and one could probably accomplish the same thing with a big rubber band and a piece of paper, the bungees are so much more classy than that as well as much sturdier. I have had my Book Bungees for a few years now and they have worn well. There is no wear and tear at all. The plastic has not broken nor has the elastic broken or went limp. The best part is that I never lose my page anymore and when I reach into my bag I know that the cover will still be in good shape.
