mopsinion's Full Review: Logitech Harmony® 520 LCD Remote Control
What this and other Logitech remotes do is set all your devices to the on and/or correct input channel - with one push of a button. So say you want to watch cable tv? You push one button and it turns your tv on, makes sure it's on the right input, turns your tivo or cable box on, and maybe your surround sound system that you run the tv's audio thru, and sets it to the correct function. Imagine the different remotes you'd have to use and the different settings you have to change to do that. So it's a pretty cool device for that.
BUT...Logitech spent very little or no money on physical design. Compared to a Tivo peanut remote, or even the free Directv remote this was replacing (or dozens of others I have used) - it has terrible ergonomics. It is thin and has a nice almost ball type feel in the hand. But the buttons are laid out in an awkward manner. Most are laid out in a strange pattern and the ones close to your thumb are so low and close together that it is very hard, if not impossible, to become familiar and comfortable with this remote.
I have found myself still using more than one remote. (The problem this remote is supposed to solve.) I use the Logitech to change from one function to the next i.e. - xbox, watch tv, listen to a cd, watch a dvd. And the free Directv remote I have for actually changing channels, fast forwarding and moving thru menus. Basically all functions besides turning stuff on.
By the looks of the other Logitech remotes the buttons are no different. They still use the same odd layout. And the thumb buttons that are to low and close placed together to be used effectively.
Logitech should take a look at Tivo's before redesigning theirs. Tivo remotes are the best I have ever used and their FREE! :) The Logitech also uses incredibly cheap plastic in the case. It actually creaks in your hand when your holding it and pushing the buttons!
Everything about this remote is worth $75 to $100. And has revolutionary functions that you can't find in another remote. But Logitech ruined it over .20 cents worth of plastic case and buttons.
I would not recommend purchasing this device considering the problems above and the cost.
