| junebugz's Full Review: Logitech QuickCam Pro 3000 Web Cam |
I recently picked up a Logitech Quickcam Pro 3000. I have had to other Logitech cameras previously. One was the old regular Quickcam which worked decent until it fell off the computer one to many times ... bad design I think it was. The other was a Clicksmart 310 which I don't think I would purchase again.
This cam outshines both of those with no questions asked. Mostly because of the features and its low light capabilities.
While you have to have a little light, this cam does still pick up a "dark" picture even just from the glow of the computer screen. By dark I mean you can tell there is not a light on, but you can still see as long as the item is close enough to the screen rays that they bounce off of it. With just a single light bulb on (at a distance of 7 or 8 feet away), it picks up tremendously over the previous cameras mentioned. I would say probably over 100% better.
The camera has a motion detection capability you can use in case you are trying to catch the cat or dog tearing up the couch, or the kids stealing the candy. You can set the detection level so it takes so much activity. High setting requires quite a bit of activity (someone walking across the room)where the low end setting barely requires much movement at all.
The camera has a built-in microphone which is great for those chats with friends and family who are unfortunately a long ways away.
As with most webcams, the 3000 Pro will let you take still images which I don't get too excited about basically because I have a 3.0megapixel digital camera that I use for that purpose. But, once again, it surpasses the capabilities of the previous cams I mentioned.
Technical data ...
Capture resolutions range from 640x480 to 160x120 (320x240 as well) for both video and still
There are a variety of still data image options including: bmp, tiff, jpeg and more
The video records in AVI format at up to 30 frames per second
The controls for exposure or color are either automatic or manual depending on your liking
The lens has a manual focus which I have rarely had to adjust
The cam is designed to work with Windows 98,2000,ME or XP
Pentium III 400Celeron,AMD Athalon process, and an AGP video card are recommended while only 300 is required ... (I am running a 1.8ghz)
64MB Ram, 100MB free hard drive, CD-rom, available USB port, and windows compatible sound card are also required ... for the hard drive if you are going to record video with it and leave on the hard drive you will probably want more than 100 MB free or otherwise burn the videos onto cd or dvd when finished with them
The only thing I could find that this cam does not have that the fancier cams have now is a zoom. This is not a big deal to me because I do not need the zoom for the limited use I have with it.
This cam is great for anyone wanting to stay in touch with those people they know and love at the wonderful cost of communicating via the internet.
I would definitely recommend if you can find at a good price (around the $50 or slightly higher range). I would look on eBay for starters.
Happy hunting.
