sb1054's Full Review: Lomo Kompakt Automat 35mm Film Camera
The beauty of this compact 35mm camera is the quality of the lens, the sturdy construction, and the automatic light metering system. This camera straddles the line between "artsy" and "toy" cameras -- to the delight of some, and the annoyance of others.
The automatic light metering system can create evocative pictures. The the light captured by the camera can be saturated, yet blurred. But basically nothing that a photographer armed with a SLR with a variable shutter couldn't achieve. But this is to miss the point somewhat. The Lomo Compakt Automat is doesn't require a great knowledge of metering, lighting or flash conditions. You can use any standard hot-shoe flash with this camera. But the automatic light metering allows you to get technically imperfect pictures full of "happy accidents" and unexpected rewards.
If that sounds like your cup of tea, then it is well worth the price, and will yield great pictures (intentionally or not) over the years. But, if you have a manual SLR with variable aperature and shutter settings, there is no need to restrain yourself by using less features, unless you enjoy the challenge of trying to work with artificial constraints.
