Pros: high energy -raises your blood sugar
Cons: taste, can ruin your day, soy blocks mineral absorption...
The Bottom Line: I used to love these bars long ago, but not now. More fiber, but poor taste and had a bad reaction. Maybe my body recognized it as poison, huh?

| jankp's Full Review: Luna Bars 1 Bar |
I used to love Luna bars, so many of their delicious flavors like Sweet Dreams, Chai Tea, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Toasted Nuts n Cranberries
I even gave them five stars in my review like many other reviewers have done. Ive deleted that review from June 2002. Today the bars have a gram more of fiber and it definitely tasted like it when I practically gagged on a Toasted Nuts n Cranberries bar last week. All I could taste too was the nuts. It was not a bit tart or moist like before, but bland almost like how nutty sawdust would taste. At least it didnt make me pass out and then throw up like the Iced Oatmeal Raisin bar did yesterday.
Im not sure what in the bar gave me such a bad reaction. Its okay for vegans like me. It could be all the evaporated cane juice in its icing all around the bar, which the other didnt have. Yet Ive eaten evaporated cane juice in All-Fruit jellies many times. Im thinking I was dehydrated because Id just woken up and hadnt drunk much water yet. All that fiber (three grams), ten grams of soy protein, twenty-eight grams of carbohydrates, 170 grams of sodium and every vitamin and mineral, it was just too much for me without more water. I even went to the emergency room to get checked out and wasted nearly the whole day there, but they couldnt find anything wrong with me except for slightly elevated blood sugar. This is what these high energy, high protein bars do. Plus I drank a glass of orange juice there!
The taste of Iced Oatmeal Raisin? Very sweet to my taste buds. Im a health-conscious person who isnt used to very sweet stuff
or lots of concentrated protein, fiber, supplements, sodium. I drink lots of water except when Im asleep, haha, and so I was most likely ill-prepared to eat this concoction. I suddenly felt light-headed as I was getting ready for the day, then incredibly hot and thirsty. I sat down right away, feeling dizzy, and my friend was there. I asked for some water and he left to get some, but the next thing I knew I was on the floor. He had helped me out of the chair and called the ambulance.
Anyway, this has never happened before. Im never sick and wasnt sick then. No fever, but clammy. I drank like a fish, asked for a cold compress and, going out the door on a stretcher, I threw up lots of beige liquid all over myself. Thats the color of the bar. Well, I immediately felt better and better, though hungry. Got an apple there in the hospital.
Do I recommend Luna bars now? No, but not just on my recent experiences with two of them. I dont think soy protein concentrate or isolate is very healthy. Its not even a Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) food. There are a lot of phytates in it that block the absorption of magnesium, zinc, calcium, iron and more so when you eat something with much of it like the Luna bar, youre paying a lot of money for minerals you wont be able to absorb. Fermented soy like miso, tempeh, well-aged soy sauce and natto do not have the phytates and are great nutrition, though look for reduced sodium. Tofu is not fermented, but the phytates can be soaked out well. I think quality tofu will have little. Sprouted soy is a healthy option too.
Highly active people with high energy needs (a sweet tooth) may find the Iced Oatmeal Raisin bar satisfying and tasty and not have bad reactions to it as long as theyre not allergic to soy, nuts or whatever is in the bar
and they drink plenty of fresh water with it. Still I cant recommend the bars because the main ingredient is soy and down the list you get soy lecithin too. I think youd absorb the minerals much better from Spiru-tein meal replacement powder that you add milk to. It never gave me a problem years ago and hopefully wont when I try it again.
