Well, I took loves2runs advice and bought a Luna Lemonzest Bar by Clif before my recent trip to Minneapolis. Boy was I glad I did! Out of the five bars I bought, this was by far the best! And if you can believe this...I might even buy more. Oh my gosh, did I just say that?
The Product:
The Whole Nutrition Bar For Women is the marketing ploy of Luna Bars. Clif Bar Inc. decided they were gonna put together a nutrition bar specifically for women, inspired by women. The women of ClifBar. Thats not to say the men didnt have a hand in the making or conception of the product...but its definitely advertised towards women, by women. Not to mention Luna is an active sponsor of The Breast Cancer Fund and its efforts.
Luna Bar is different than many other nutrition bars in the fact that its engineered for women. Theyve made sure to include calcium, protein, folic acid and soy. All the components we, as women, have recently been bombarded with to help with our body and well being. Wellness and health is the trend and Luna is on the bandwagon.
Luna dumps 25 vitamins and minerals into their nutrition bars, and Im glad to say...they are actually nutrients Im concerned about in my every day life. Luna genuinely seems interested in the health of women, and the ingredients theyve made these bars with, shows it. Not reading the label very carefully in the store, I was please to read later that this bar is not only wheat and diary free (yeah Im lactose intolerant also), but also doesnt contain high fructose corn syrup. Finally! A bar that doesnt taste like Im eating pure sugar!
Unfortunately, since Im allergic to chocolate, I cant partake of each and every flavor of nutrition bar. I actually passed up the LemonZest bar during my first nutrition bar experience, as it just didnt sound appetizing. Boy was I wrong!
The favors of Luna include:
Tropical Crisp
Sesame Raisin Crunch
Lemon Zest
Toasted Nuts N Cranberry
Chai Tea
Chocolate Pecan Pie
Smores
Nutz Over Chocolate
See anything different here? Two-Thirds of the flavors are NOT chocolate. Its usually the other way around. I usually dont have this many choices to choose from. Way to go Luna!
Ive yet to be impressed with the ingredients of the nutrition bars Ive eaten. A majority of the bars are chemical or genetically generated...and trust me; they taste like it too. But there was something different about Luna Bar. It actually tasted good, and I found myself enjoying my eating experience.
Here are the ingredients:
LunaProTM (soy protein isolate, rolled oats, soy flour, rice flour, roasted soybeans, crisp rice [isolated soy protein, rice flour, malt, salt], flaxseeds), brown rice syrup, lemon nuggets (evaporated cane juice, fractionated palm kernel oil, oat fiber, oat flour, gum arabic, citric acid, lemon oil, soy lecithin, natural color), natural flavor, lemon oil, citric acid, decaffeinated green tea extract. Soy Milk Coating: evaporated cane juice, fractionated palm kernel oil, soy milk (soybean, water), soy lecithin, natural flavors.
Those lemon nuggets were really good too. They added a slight sweetness to the bar with just a hint of tartness.
The bar is 180 calories for a bar just over an ounce and a half. And yes, I do wish it had been a little bit bigger. A few more bites would have been nice. With just a hint of fat (3 g) and a better balancing act of carbos to protein, I found this bar didnt give me the major sugar rush the other bars gave. LunaBar contains 14g of sugar and 10g of protein.
My Experience
I ate my LunaBar during snacktime on the airplane. When the stewardess handed me the .5 ounce bag of Airways Chex Mix, I decided that wasnt gonna cut it...so I dug out my LunaBar and got busy. I have to say the texture was perfect. It wasnt so chewy that my jaw ached. It was almost a cross between a really dense rice crispy treat and a dry brownie. The texture was pleasant and easy to eat. It curbed my chewing craving as well as satisfied my sweet tooth. But again, it didnt give me that sugar rush I hate so much. I found myself satisfied for a few hours with the LunaBar. I mean really satisfied. I didnt feel those hunger pangs after I ate it.
The lemon flavoring was not too strong or too bitter. Or too sweet for that matter. It was just the right flavor combination to meet the need. And if you can believe it (I sure cant!), Im thinking of purchasing some more LunaBars.
See, I have this snack Im supposed to eat in the middle of the day, and I just have a hard time getting it in every day. And if I dont...Im starving by dinnertime. Im thinking if I had some of these bars laying around, I could eat it while Im out and about...as its completely portable.
Well, not only to I trust loves2run, but now Im taking her advice on nutrition bars! You might be reading about me training for marathons soon...
Dont bet on it!
