I'm sorry. The commercials were not just misleading. They out and out LIED to my child.
Do you remember in grade school - covering a piece of paper with patches of color in crayon and then covering the entire thing with a thick layer of black crayon. Then you would scrape off portion of the black to make your "picture"
That's the idea behind this "drawing board". There are patches of color covered by (for lack of a better term) a black paste. Then it is all sealed in plastic. The child is supposed to be able to use an enclosed "tool" to move the paste out of the way and leave behind a colorful masterpiece. Then the child could use the "tool" to re-spread the black paste - erasing their work - and start over.
It sounded too good to be true - no paper, no crayons, no mess, hours of fun. Well it was -- too good to be true that is.
In 1998 my daughter really really wanted this toy. I had a feeling that it wouldn't work like on TV but when one of her aunt's bought it for her I was as happy as she was.
I had this image that even if it wasn't as good as on TV it would still be a mess-less distraction for her.
It wasn't even that. This toy did not work AT ALL. The black paste simply did not stay put after being moved with the tool - drawn lines would disappear after you drew them. Other times the paste would simply not budge. The tool did not work as advertised..it was simply a flimsy piece of plastic.
My daughter was unable to even use the board to write letters and words as nothing stayed. It was frustrating and disappointing for her. For her Aunt this toy was a total waste of money and every time I see their commercials i want to call them and ask "why lie?"
