| Suzer's Full Review: Mary & Robb's Westwood Cafe |
Frequently I spend my Saturday mornings swimming and aquajogging with friends at a local pool. While we do the swimming for fitness and stress relief, we are absolutely ravenous following the dip! On a few occasions we have gone to Mary & Robb's Cafe for breakfast or lunch, and have never been disappointed in the wide ranging menu, relaxed atmosphere, very good diner-type food, and it doesn't cost us an arm or a leg. I find Mary & Robbs to be a cross between a diner and a deli as they offer a more extensive menu than a regular diner.
Mary & Robb's (no longer owned by Mary & Robb) is located in Westwood on Pico Blvd just 4 blocks south of Wilshire, so the parking can be a little tricky. You can however find ample street parking if you don't mind walking a block or so, and if you are really lucky, as I have been a couple of times, you may find parking right in front of the restaurant.
On my first trip to the cafe I ordered their 1/2 sandwich and salad. I ordered a turkey sandwich and found it to be very tasty, thick, and quite sufficient to satiate my growling stomach (It wasn't the usual pressed meat that many places try to pass off as freshly carved turkey). The salad was not exceptional as it seemed to be mostly iceberg lettuce but I was pleased none-the-less, and I was thrilled to note that though this meal was was a combo, and therefore a deal, it also came with coleslaw or fresh fruit. The lunch combo was $8.50.
I have also gone there for breakfast and love their create your own omelet or scramble. The omelets are cooked to perfection, not too watery, and not overdone, and I love that I can have it the way I love it. They offer a choice of 5 different cheeses in your omelet as well as sundried tomato, spinach, onion, mushrooms, turkey breast, bacon, ham, bell pepper, etc. Of course the more items you add in, the cost does go up! You have the option of toast, English muffin, bagel and either home fried potatoes, sliced tomatoes, cottage cheese or fruit. They offer egg substitute at a nominal fee.
Their menu varies from chili, salads filet mignon, 8 different salads, numerous sandwiches as well as specialty sandwiches, 7 different sandwiches geared towards vegetarians, cold sandwiches, burgers, kebobs, cornish game hens, seafood. They offer wine by the glass, beer, frozen delights as they call them (ice cream, yogurt).
The service is pleasant. It is generally good; they are unobtrusive, keep your water glasses filled.
This is really a family restaurant, so while it is hardly what I would call romantic, it is certainly appropriate to take your kids.
Reservations?:
It has never been necessary when I have gone there, and we have never waited more than 5 or 10 minutes.
Summing up:
I highly recommend this casual dining restaurant for you whether you are with friends or family. Breakfast is served all day, so if you are a breakfast fanatic as I am, you should be happy. I am giving Mary & Robb's 4 stars.
