Freak369's Full Review: Mead Spiral Bound Single-Subject College Rule Note...
I can remember a time not so long ago when the house was filled with primary notebooks. Now that my oldest are away at school, my two youngest are still homeschooling and little Annabelle thinks that the kiddie notebooks are beneath her; they seem to be a thing of the past. When my youngest asked me if he could take a three day trip with some homeschool families I was a little hesitant; wed just moved to the neighborhood and I didnt really know these people all too well but after meeting with the parents that would be chaperones I decided to let him go. One of the things that he wanted to stock up on were college rule notebooks. Why college rule? Because you can fit more on a page and god forbid someone sees you with a wide rule notebook [sarcasm]. Since we had so much luck with other Mead products I figured they were the best way to go, the pages werent perforated but he didnt seem to mind. He wasnt planning on ripping out pages so that wasnt a deciding factor for either of us.
Mead Single Subject Spiral Bound College Rule Notebook
These are great notebooks to have around for the high school and college crowd but if you have little eggheads running around, they can certainly make use of them. They have the usual top margin and side margin on both the front and back of the pages. This is a single subject notebook so there are no dividers or pockets to it; if this is something that you are looking for, look elsewhere because this is the bare bones notebook from the Mead line of products. Since my youngest writes only with gel pens these days I was a little worried that the ink would seep through the pages rendering the back side unusable but that was only the case when he left the pen on the paper too long or drew thing in the notebook. The books that I picked up for myself after he raved about how much he liked them all performed better than I expected.
So what makes this different from other single subject notebooks? Well, I like the fact that the wire spiral binding overlaps the edge so theres no chance that it can get caught on skin or clothing. Another perk is the thick cover; this helps to protect the pages from getting wrinkled or smashed when its taken out of or slid into a backpack. I knew that this would be a plus for my son because he practically lives out of his backpack [the apple doesnt fall far from the tree]. The trip was to several historical landmarks in the tri-state area so I knew that hed be taking a lot of notes and he would have a lot of leaflets and pamphlets that hed be bringing home with him, most of which he would end up gluing or taping into the notebooks his usual routine. I figured that two or three of the single subject notebooks would be enough to hold him over during the trip even if he went crazy taking notes and collecting souvenirs.
I didnt start thinking about the strength pf the pages until after he left for the trip. He likes to glue things to the pages as a sort of scrapbook kind of deal and I was kicking myself for not trying this routine out before he left. As I mentioned in other review, my youngest can be a bit anal about things and if the pages werent strong enough to hold up to a glue stick I am sure hed let me have it when he got home. Thankfully the pages and the wire spine were strong enough to accommodate this little quirky habit he has. In the past other notebook pages would rip or the spine would start to sag if he glued too many things to the pages. Not the case with this one, it held up like a trooper!
Price
You can find these at local retail stores like Target and Wal-Mart for about a dollar fifty. That might seem like a lot to spend on one notebook but in my opinion they are worth it if you have the need for a single subject college ruled notebook. Chances are you can pick them up for a lot less when they have the back to school sales so stock up on them if you think they might be of use for you or your child. Please keep in mind that these are single subject notebooks and they dont have pockets or dividers so if that is something that you or your child need, go with a different version notebook.
The Bottom Line
The notebooks held up great during my sons trip and his only complaint about them was that they didnt have a pocket to shove all the handouts in and a few of them got wrinkled. Next time hell be better prepared because he picked up some helpful tips from the older kids to bring along a few manila envelopes or some plastic pouches. I am sure that my two oldest would make good use of these since they really like the college rule notebooks. They are coming home for two weeks next month then going back for another term so I am sure they will want to stock up on these while they are home. For some reason the Mead products are hard to come by where they are going to school so theyll come home and drag me to the office supply store a few days before they leave and I am sure that once they get a look at these, theyll be in love with them. Hey, they are eggheads, cut them some slack.
