BryRrose's Full Review: Merz Pharma Mederma, Skin Care for Scars, Topical ...
A few years ago I had to have some minor surgery that left me with an inch scar. Vanity got the best of me and I worried about that silly one inch scar. I decided that I would buy Mederma and use it. I was amazed at the results.
Recently, I decided to catch a hot falling iron with my stomach. It left a huge 3 inch scar on my stomach. After it healed, I went out and bought a new tube of Mederma to start the treatment of making this ugly scar disappear, or at least to make it less noticeable.
First of all, What is Mederma?
In a nutshell, MEDERMA® Skin Care for Scars™ is an invisible, greaseless, pleasant-smelling gel recommended by doctors and pharmacists to improve the color, texture and overall appearance of old and new scars. (copied from their website)
Mederma can be used on all types of scars, old and new. They say that you can use it on scars from : Acne, Surgery, Burns, Injury and Stretch Marks. However, they do say that Mederma works best on new stretch marks. Mederma states this on their website about stretch marks, " MEDERMA® works best on newly formed stretch marks (depending on your skin color, stretch marks start out as pinkish, reddish brown, or dark brown streaks). Unfortunately, once stretch marks have faded to a silvery white, they do not respond as well to MEDERMA®."
Mederma has a mild fragrant smell to it. I want to say it smells like a very faint baby powder scent. I do not find it offensive and the scent does not linger.
What I did - As soon as the incision had healed, I started using Mederma. I applied a thin coating of Mederma 3 - 4 times a day to my scar. I used it for approximately 6 - 8 weeks.
Results - The results were phenomenal. After about 3 months or so, I could hardly notice that I had a scar. I had to go back to the surgeon to have additional surgery in the same area. I asked the doctor if we could make the incision on the same scar. She looked at the area and said "where is it?" She was amazed with the results that I had with the Mederma too.
Where to buy the Mederma - I bought my Mederma at my local Super Store, but you can purchase it at almost any grocery store or drug store. I paid around $8.00 for it a few years ago. I purchased a new tube recently and paid $12.00 for it. I know that it seems like a lot of money to pay for such a small tube, but it is well worth it to reduce the signs of your scar. You usually find Mederma in the first aid section, with the bandaids.
