| shan1's Full Review: Midol Maximum Strength 80 Caplets Menstrual Formul... |
There are five days out of every month, that I adore. You got it--THAT time of the month. I LOVE feeling like a water balloon. I love spending two days in bed, because I cramp so bad, movement is out of the question. Yep, have to LOVE being female!
About two years ago, I decided I needed something other than tea and a hot water bottle to ease my pains. Because of certain medications I was on, I had to be careful using over the counter drugs, especially those that contain caffeine. I found Midol Menstrual caplets sitting on the shelf. Even though they are aspirin free, they DO contain caffeine. The equivalent of one cup of coffee per two capsules. Yowsers! Taking these means NO cup of coffee before work for me!
A quick scan of the box shows that they supposedly relieve:
-Cramping
-Headaches
-Bloating
-Backaches
and
-Fatigue (hmmmm....maybe this is the caffeine in play)???
A back of the box inspection showed this little warning:
..ask your doctor whether you should take acetaminophen or other pain relievers/fever reducers. ..may cause liver damage.
THIS should have been my first sign that this product belongs on the shelf. Acetaminophen is found in Tylenol's fever reducer for children. And, when I took it in the past, it made me ILL. But, I was a child then, and my body had a LOW tolerance for medicines.
When I got home, I popped two of the capsules with a big glass of water. According tot he box, I can take them every 4 hours, up to eight capsules a day. So, I took my two and waited..
..and waited..
and waited...
After four hours, I took two more, just to be sure. But, the pain was still there. And, I was VERY jittery, because of all the caffeine in my system. As a result, I was moving around quite a bit, and my pain just got worse and worse. I was showing all the signs of a caffeine high, even on the four capsules( same as 2 cups of coffee). My body wasn't accustomed to the caffeine being in it, and it was reacting BIG time. My head ached more than usual, and I was wide awake.
Grrrr....
The next morning, I was still feeling bloated and irritable. And, I was very confused. This product contained similar ingredients to the Excedrin I had taken for years, yet I was having completely different reactions. Which lead me to wonder, if these contain more caffeine then they actually claim.
Unfortunately, I can NOT recommend these. I've used them on and off during the years, to help ease my backaches, but that's about the only good they have done me. I switched back to my herbal teas and a doctor prescribed birth control pill..(which, have worked wonders for my cramps). As for the bloating and crankiness...well, guess I can STILL blame those on being a woman! (grins)
