Pros: great location, low room rate (for NYC standards)
Cons: room rate still high for what you get, elevators
The Bottom Line: If you want a clean, fairly low-cost hotel in a great part of the city, this is for you, otherwise, go elsewhere.

Background
We found this hotel while searching for an inexpensive place to stay during our excursion to New York City to see A Chorus Line on Broadway. We wanted to stay very close to Times Square, but did not want to pay an enormous amount of money. If you are strictly looking at the quality of the hotel versus the cost, I think the hotel is overpriced for what you get, but if you want a superb location at a lower price than the other hotels in the area, this is your place.
Location
The location is fantastic! You are right on 8th Avenue and 46th Street, which is a heartbeat away from all the fun of Times Square. We were literally around the corner from where A Chorus Line was playing, which was great because it was pouring rain on show day. You are also very close to Restaurant Row, which has some fabulous places to eat. There are other touristy places that are within walking distance, like central park, and you are just blocks from the subway as well.
Check In/Check Out and First Impressions
The set up of the lobby area is rather strange and occupies two floors, but I suppose this is necessary because it is NYC. There are two entrances to the hotel, one on the 8th Avenue side and a smaller entrance on 46th Street. If you want a taxi (or help getting a taxi), you will want to go to the 8th Avenue side. The staff was very attentive and helped us get a cab pretty quickly.
The first floor is where you entered the hotel. To get to the front desk, the shops and/or your room, you needed to take the escalator (or stairs) to the second floor.
Check in, which is on the second floor, was pretty easy. We had to wait a little, but not an unreasonable wait time. The gentleman who helped us was very pleasant. We even received a great little map of the area that was folded up so that it was easily portable (and it had various important hotel extensions on it). He also took down the names of all the guests staying in the room, for security purposes, and in order to access the elevator lobby, you had to show security your card. Speaking of the elevators, if you want a place with fast and new elevators, this is not the place for you. The elevators were very slow and old, so you may want to allow extra time to get where you need to go.
In addition to the front desk and the elevators, there is also a little shop on the second floor where you can buy souvenirs, gifts, soda, books, luggage, etc. The prices were pretty much what I expected from a NYC shop located in a hotel, meaning they were inflated, but acceptable.
There is also a coffee shop in the second floor (chock full of nuts), but Im not sure of its hours, because it was never open when we were there (on a weekend). It does not really matter, as you can buy coffee in the gift shop, but why bother when Starbucks is a couple of blocks away.
Check out, which was at 12 pm, was easy as well. You could always go to the front desk to check out, but I prefer to use the express check out, which you can do via your TV. They do have a third check out option, which was to call a specific extension to check out.
The Room
Let me start by saying that there were three of us staying in a deluxe 2 double bed room for 2 nights, and we managed just fine, especially since this is NYC and you really do not spend that much time in your hotel room. Also, the size of the room was quite large by NYC standards. The room gave me the same feeling as the lobby. Back in its day, this was a classy room, but it has not changed with the times. The room was decorated in gold and blue and definitely had an old feel to it, but it was clean. The air conditioning was one of those old air/heating systems with the knobs located on the floor by the window. It was old, but adequate. We had a TV with cable; the TV was small, but the picture was good. There was a small closet with a safe in it. There was also a huge mirror in the room right over the dresser, which is a big plus when you are trying to get ready in the morning.
The bathroom was a decent size, and looked like it was renovated more recently than the room. The light in the bathroom was MUCH better than the light in the hotel room. The water pressure in the shower was either really hard or really soft, there was no in between. The shower did not drain very quickly. They did offer a few toiletries (Natura brand face and body bar, conditioner and lotion and Nirvae (sp?) shampoo). There was also a hair dryer in the bathroom.
Amenities/Extras
Besides the amenities listed above, they did have a gym on the third floor, but I did not use it. They also are connected to a pub, which was open until 4 a.m. on Saturday/Sunday morning.
Although the majority of our trip was wonderfully enjoyable, we did have one mishap which unfortunately ended up with my husband in the emergency room. Milford Plaza was extremely helpful, and the reaction time was fantastic. They had people to help us almost instantly, and a manager did check in on us in the morning to see if they could help in any way.
Overall
If you are looking for a clean, fairly low-cost hotel in a great part of the city, I recommend Milford Plaza. If you are looking for more of a high-end experience, this is not the place for your.
Thanks to all who read/rate.
