There are many classic games that I played as a child and then purchased for my own children. Now that we have so many nieces and nephews I find myself purchasing them yet again. I try to find games that meet three goals; they won’t break the bank, they must not have millions of pieces and are easy for kids of all ages to play. A lot of the classic games seem to fall into this category.
We recently purchased Milton Bradley Chutes and Ladders at a local superstore for the bargain price of $4.82. That takes care of my number one priority when purchasing a game for little kids. I noticed right away that the box has changed yet again. They must update the artwork on it for every generation and sometimes twice in a generation because this is totally different then the one I purchased for the boys many years ago.
Inside the Milton Bradley Chutes and Ladders box is a game board, 4 plastic stands, 4 pawns, a spinner with an arrow and an instruction sheet. (This meets the second goal I have for purchasing a game – not many pieces) Each of the cardboard pawns has a picture of a child on it and the pawns to choose from are of two girls and two boys. The cardboard pawns slide into the little plastic stands so they can stay standing as they are moved around the board. The spinner has pictures of the kids around it and the numbered part is shaped like a pie cut into six wedges with each one of the wedges numbered one through six.
The Milton Bradley Chutes and Ladders game board has a green outer edge to it and inside that are one hundred squares. The squares alternate between white and blue and each one is numbered with 1 being in the bottom left hand corner. You will find 100 in the top left hand corner. On squares 1, 4, 9, 21, 46, 51, 71 and 79 you will find pictures of children who have done something good and a blue ladder that takes you to a higher place on the board. On squares 48, 55, 62, 64, 87, 93, 95, and 98 you will find pictures of children doing things they are not supposed to do and chutes taking them somewhere lower on the board.
To play the Milton Bradley Chutes and Ladders game each person must chose a pawn to play with and set it next o the game board on the lower left side. Then everyone takes turns spinning the wheel and the person with the highest number goes first. Each person take turns spinning the wheel and moving their pawns according to the number the spinner stopped on. If you land at the bottom of the ladder go up it and if you land at the top of a chute you must go down it. The winner is the first person to get to 100. Now I have achieved my third goal in purchasing the perfect game for me and the child I am trying to entertain.
This game is recommended for children ages 3 to 6 but I play it and it is still fun when you are playing with a child who is just learning to count. Another thing I enjoy is how excited they get when they land on a ladder or how sad they get when they have to go down a chute. This game is a great reminder of what children should and should not do and that no matter what they do, there will be a good or bad consequence to it. It is a valuable tool to help teach the children in your life to count.
I would highly recommend you pick up Milton Bradley Chutes and Ladders and play with a child you know. Those moments don’t last forever and what better way to spend time together then playing a board game.
