bubbajames's Full Review: Milwaukee 0299 20 Drill 1/2 850 Magnum
This is without a doubt one of the best drills out there. When it comes to power, this drill really shines. The fact that it is made in USA is a nice bonus, as few tools are nowadays.
Milwaukee makes this drill in 2 other varieties-one has a keyless chuck and the other has a removeable cord. Those 2 models have ruber overmold grip material on the handle, where this one does not. Other than that, all 3 drills feature a very powerful 8 amp motor with variable speeds of 0-850 RPMs.
There is a side handle to help the user keep control and avoid injury. I highly recomend using it. The handle is machined that it can fit into a variety of detents located all around the drill collar behind the chuck. The detents ensure the handle won't move out of place.
The cord is a high quality 3 prong rubber with sufficient length for most tasks. The cord has a lanyard to hold the chuck key for the drills heavy duty keyed chuck.
This drill is like a Tank. Tough and basic. There aren't any bells and whistles here. No free bits, no case. Just the drill, the handle and the chuck key.
In use, the drill just purrs as it does its job. no drama. It is suprisingly light and comfortable to use for long periods. Amoung the tasks it has performed are- -Running A large self feed bit to bore holes for a sink vent -driving home 3/8ths lags without pilot holes -Dilling out heavy gauge steel stair brackets for larger bolts Auger bits, holesaws and self feeds are no problem for this beast of a drill. It has survived some pretty hard drops too.
I paid less than 100 dollars for the drill ages ago when Home depot saw giving a credit on old drills brought in as a trade in promotion. I never regreted my purchase. The only 2 drill that can compete with this drill are the Makita DP 4000 series drills and the Bosch 1034.(both of these are considerably more expensive than this drill.
Since buying this, I have converted the chuck to a keyless unit, and bought a metal case on e-bay to house the drill and some bits.
