| Freak369's Full Review: Denys Cazet - Minnie and Moo: Will You Be My Valen... |
When I first started reading Will You Be My Valentine? I got the feeling that it would be exactly like the movie Secret Admirer. Instead of there being one note that gets passed around from person to person, Minnie and Moo write different poems for the barnyard animals when they decide to play cupid. If youve read any of the other books in the series youll know that Minnie and Moo are two cows that have huge hearts, love living on the farm and always manage to find something interesting to do. These are great books for younger kids who are starting to read or those who are trying to read on their own. The text flows nicely and theres rarely a humongous word that theyll have trouble with. To top it all off, the illustrations are excellent. This is part of the I Can Read series that promotes reading, adventure and a whole lot of fun. I got started on the series after I received some of the Halloween themed books from friends, after that I started buying them for little Annabelle and let me tell you, she loves them!
Will You Be My Valentine?
Its Valentines Day on the farm and love is in the air thanks to Minnie and Moo. As usual they are under the bog old oak tree with a box of cream puffs, inspired by the moment Moo starts to recite a poem just for Minnie, of course, its about a cream puff. Minnie bursts into tears, it seems that poems about food always make her a little soft around the middle. This leads to both of them coming up with the idea that everyone on the farm could use a little love poem, especially the cat and the dog who were at it once again. As you might suspect, this leads to a whole lot of confusion when they start shooting the wrong poems to the wrong animals. Can you imagine the mixed signals some of the animals were getting? One of the funniest was when Don Juan del Toro, a huge bull, received one of these little love notes; he saw Madge and Bea, two cows, reading a similar looking note and assumed that his note was from them.
I almost fell off the chair laughing when Minnie and Moo shot a love poem to Zeke and Zack, two turkeys, they cry out INDIANS and start running through the farmers yard. Minnie and Moo, in their infinite wisdom, decide to grace the farmer and his wife with a few poems to rekindle the flames of love. Unfortunately, they sent the farmers wife one that was intended for the turkeys and the farmer one that was got the goat. Both the notes got their feathers in an uproar; the farmers wife thinks the farmer thinks shes got turkey legs and, well, the farmer thinks his wife thinks hes an old goat. Pheew! The farmer and his wife look at the notes and realize that neither of them are in their handwriting and leave it to the farmer to say, Those two cows before he gets cut off by Millie, the farmers wife. Cows cant write poems.
Like almost all the other Minnie and Moo books, this one has a touching ending. Both the cows are tired from their day long adventure around the farm and even though they have more poems, they undress and take a break. Minnie recites a cute poem about the day and all that happened and Moo proclaims that shes finally written a poem of her own. They both exchange a Valentines Day hug and best wishes. So the romance may be gone from the farm
until next year when those two precocious cows decide to dress up and shoot out love poems once again!
My Take
This is an adorable story with exceptional illustrations and really adds a lot to the series. It shows kids that even though things got a little mixed up, it all worked out in the end and everyone got a little taste of cupids arrow. Even though this is a Valentines Day type story it is something that kids can read over and over again because there is a lot of build up to the story; as they go from animal to animal you wonder if they are ever going to get the notes right. Besides that, how many times do you ever get to see a cow dressed up in tights, ballet slippers and halos? About the only bad thing is the suggested retail price; the hard cover book sells for $16.98 so you might want to read through it first before you buy it to make sure it is something that is going to get a lot of use. You can try sites like eBay but youll want to make sure that the book is in good condition, doesnt have any rips and someone hasnt taken a marker to the pages.
The Bottom Line
With easy to read text, a nice story and cute illustrations this book is a great addition to the Minnie and Moo series and I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to give their kids a few giggles. The suggested retail price might scare some people off but I am sure that if you look for this on the after season sale table or at various online bookstores you can find it for less. This is a great addition to my growing library of Minnie and Moo books and I am sure that no Valentines Day from now on will be complete without reading this a few times.
As always, thanks for the read!
