I was first introduced to this clay in a college class called, "Art For the Elementary Age Child" about 4 years ago. In class we were given the assignment to come up with unique art projects that could be done by young children. One of the students brought in some puppets that were made by the children in one of the classes she had visited. The play was based on the book, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". The children had formed the caterpillar and all of the food that the caterpillar had eaten a hole through out of this modeling clay. They put them on popsicle sticks so they could be held up to a small puppet theater. The puppets were so cute and colorful.
Since then I have purchased this clay for my four children. They love it! The clay is easy to handle and is clean to work with. The colors are bright, coming in red, green, yellow, blue, black, and white. They can be mixed to make new colors.
The clay itself is lightweight and spongy with a smooth feel. When it dries it is still very light weight and so makes an excellent material to make projects that will be hung. The clay stays upright and won't droop while drying so is it easy to make people out of it. My children also discovered that it bounces when dry. One time they made bouncy balls out of it.
One year we made Christmas ornaments from this modeling clay. For Santa Claus you make two small flat circles for his suit, trim it with white. Make the face and roll out small eyes and lips. Make black boots and belt and a hat. Use a small toothpick to make a hole in the top for some ribbon to hang it from your tree. You can also make candy canes, bells and trees. These are all things that a child as young as 4 or 5 could make. This clay would also be fun to make small Easter ornaments and figurines such as bunnies and eggs.
My children like to make jewelry such as bracelets and rings from this clay. My boys enjoy making cars. The clay dries in about 24 hours. You can paint the dried product with acrylic paint.
Crayola modeling clay is somewhat expensive compared to regular clay and playdough. Your children should have some project in mind before opening the foil package that the clay comes in because the package can not be reused. I have found that you can use a ziplock bag to store this clay for future use if you need to.
This is truly a unique clay and is fun to play with for people of all ages. Buy some and let your creative energies flow. There are a million projects you can use this clay for.
