tonism's Full Review: Mosquito Magnet Liberty by American Biophysics
Last Summer (2006) I purchased a Liberty Mosquito Magnet, Model MM3000, for which I paid $499.00 before taxes.
The Mosquito Magnet worked fine for the season last year. However, this product has ceased working.
I contacted Mosquito Magnet, http://www.mosquitomagnet.com, which is owned by Woodstream Corp. We were told that we had to purchase "quick clear cartridges" in order to clear the lines.
My family and I took turns trouble-shooting the problem. We purchased the cartridges used them ALL, did everything we were told to do, and with two (2) full tanks of propane gas, the thing simply will not fire up. Just fault lights.
This companys policy is to have the customer ship them a new non-working piece of equipment, which they get to keep, refurbish and sell to someone else, while they SELL the person with the "broken" and also "new" product, a refurbished one for additional MONIES.
The Woodstream Repairman told me that the product can be returned (purchased brand new) at a shipping cost of about $100.00, and that they would send us a refurbished unit! WOW! What a deal.
We searched for the Adapter that goes with the 'quick clear' cartridge, could not find it, so I ended up ordering another. As soon as I placed the order, it was found, so I called right back to reverse the transaction.
Their very UNHELPFUL SLACKARDS in their so-called Customer Service did everything in their power to do absolutely NOTHING!
I was told over and over by different representatives that I first had to receive the order, $8.95 shipping and $1.05 Tax, then return it at my expense, in order to undo the purchase. Another told me to just refuse the package when it arrives in order to save on paying for shipping.
I made several phone calls, talked to Nicole, Kielan, Roberta, and others. Finally, upon my insistence, I was told that YES, they could reverse the transaction.
Here is the text of the email I received from them on 6/4/2007 around 9:00 p.m.
I spoke with you today on the phone regarding an online order cancellation. This order has been cancelled. If you have further problems please contact me. As for your online posting, you need to make it clear that we did not require you to send back the items at your expense.
Below is a description of our policy regarding in-warranty mosquito magnets.
Units can be repaired within one year of purchase. We require only that you mail in the power head. You do not have to send in the entire unit so it would not even be close to $100 to ship. It would cost no money at all to have this repaired and shipped back. The average wait time is approx 10-12 days.
If you prefer not to wait 10-12 days for the unit to be repaired, you can opt for a refurbished one which takes a lot less time. Again, you can return the power head only. Woodstream will send a refurbished power head upon receipt of the returned power pack. The cost for a refurb is $174.99. The reason we charge this is because we want to encourage consumers to have these units repaired, yet have an alternative option available if time is of the essence.
Note: Power head is a common phrase used to describe the upper assembly of the Liberty, Defender, and Liberty Plus. This is plastic housing for the main parts of the Mosquito Magnet trap. The stand, wheels, propane tank, propane hose, base, base post, or legs should not be returned.
The expense of having this sent in if you are willing to have it repaired would run between $20-30. The power head is about 32 lbs.
The morning of 6/5/2007, I got a call from Cheryl. I was informed that the cancellation did not go thru, so they are crediting my bank account even though they have shipped the product. And, oh, I don't have to send it back! It is not worth it to them, I was told.
I am not at all confident that they will do what they said, further, I have no idea how to address the $499.00 piece of garbage I invested in.
They are shipping garbage and trying to replace it with more garbage!
