Thinking about buying a Startac? Consider these points:
(1) The Size: There is no question that the size and shape of the Startac make it one of the handiest, most pocketable phones on the market today. Compared to the Nokia 6100-series, the Startac is much smaller and lighter. Although the Nokia 8000-series represents a formidable competitor, it currently is available only on AT&T Wireless and offers a much shorter battery life than the Startac.
(2) The Interface: Unfortunately, the small size of the Startac comes at a price. The screen is relatively small and tries to pack a lot of information into it. Thus, although it is extremely nice that the Startac now has the ability to store multiple phone numbers for a single individual (i.e., with one address-book entry for "John Doe" that lists his work number , home number, and mobile number), the interface by which one scrolls from one number to the next feels a bit ergonomically awkward.
(3) The Antenna: Unlike Nokia, which uses a fixed stubby antenna on most of its phones, the Startac has an extending flexible antenna that is prone to getting bent, no matter how carefully you keep your phone. Although the phone certainly still works with a bent antenna, some people might find it aesthetically annoying, especially because the Startac antenna is somewhat longer than those found in other phones, even when in its retracted (i.e., nonextended) position.
(4) Battery Life: The battery life is excellent, offering better talk time and standby time than nearly every other phone on the market.
(4) OVERALL: In my mind, size matters. The pocketability of the Startac, combined with its strong battery life, make it an excellent digital wireless phone, despite some shortcomings in its interface.
