| wifeofvolsfan's Full Review: Mr. Coffee 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker ISX20 |
My husband loves to drink coffee so I decided for his birthday Id buy him a nice coffeemaker. Weve had the same cheap one for what seemed like forever. It made coffee. It was very basic. However, when I poured coffee just as much went on the counter as in my cup. It got on my nerves. I wanted my husband and I to have a newer coffeemaker, one that would hopefully not have that same problem when pouring. So I headed out to Walmart to browse the selection. I found the Mr. Coffee Coffeemaker ISX20, which looked to be a wonderful coffeemaker. I came home and looked it up on Epinions and there were no reviews (back in late October). It looked great and had all of the features I was looking for. What a mistake that turned out to be.
We got the coffeemaker out of the box and replaced our old coffeemaker. I cleaned the coffeemaker before we used it. I washed the pot and lid as well as the filter basket in warm dish water. I then ran through a full pot of water through it. The cord is approximately two feet long, which provided enough length to reach my plug. This coffeemaker looks so cool that I was really excited about using it. The clock display is a bright green circle on the front. It has a really modern look. Setting the clock was easy to do and figuring out how to use it was no problem either.
We made our first pot of coffee. I went to pour the first cup and all of it went in the cup. None was on the counter. I was thrilled with my purchase and my husband was pretty happy about his gift as well. So everything was going great with our new coffeemaker for awhile. Then all of a sudden it started leaking from the bottom. I would go to make coffee and have a big puddle of water underneath the maker on my counter. At first I thought maybe I had accidentally moved the pot while I was pouring in the water. I made sure that I was very careful the next time I made coffee. Now I was certain that I hadnt been the cause of the leakage. Our coffeemaker leaked every single time we made coffee.
So I thought surely this was just one in a million problem. I hunted for my receipt so I could take it back and exchange it. I couldnt find it anywhere. So I had this bright idea that I would buy this same coffeemaker again and then return the defective one and just get my money back. My husband complained. He didnt want anything to do with this same coffeemaker again. I hated to be out $35 though so I talked him into buying another one. I just knew that another one would work perfectly. I love the look and features, just hate the mess.
So last weekend my husband bought the new coffeemaker. I washed the first one and got it all packaged up. Then washed the second one and got it all set up. I used it the next day and everything worked great, no mess. Day two I see water all over the counter from the coffeemaker. I was horrified. I knew this was not just a one time problem. So now here I am with two crappy coffeemakers and one receipt. Then while looking at the warranty information it says to not return the item to where purchased. It said to call 1-800-672-6333. I am going to try to take it back to Walmart first and see what happens. I cant believe that I am stuck with two pieces of junk. Why didnt I just listen to my husband?
Then I come to Epinions tonight and look up the coffeemaker. Well guess what? A one star rating with problems the same as mine. What a piece of junk! Why dont they pull this nightmare of a coffeemaker off the shelves? I love the look, but I hate the mess. The coffee that it makes tastes great, but it isnt worth the mess.
So if anyone really cares about the rest of the details I will tell them just to give a complete review, but seriously I dont think it matters. Learn from my mistakes - STEER CLEAR of this coffeemaker. I will never and I repeat never buy another Mr. Coffee product again. I am done with this company.
Features:
Brewing Capacity - 12 Cups
Removable Filter Basket - Dishwasher safe, easy to remove and clean
Pause n Serve - If you need to pour a cup of coffee while it is brewing that is no problem. You can remove the pot for up to 30 seconds.
Dual Water Windows - You can see the water going in and easily pour how many cups youd like to be made
Non-Stick Warmer Plate - keeps your coffee hot while sitting
Brew Strength Selector - You can select regular or strong.
Water Filtration System - It says it removes 97% of the chlorine from the water. However, I could not tell a difference in the taste.
Cord Storage - You can put the cord inside the back of the coffeemaker. There isnt much of a cord though so I had to have mine out on the counter to reach the plug.
Removable Stainless Steel Shower Head Cover - You can take this off to clean it easily.
On/Off Light
Two-Hour Auto Shut-Off - After two hours you will hear a beep and the coffeemaker will turn off.
Clock
Fresh Brew Timer Feature - This is a feature that I have really enjoyed. You can look at this and tell how long the coffee has been brewed. That is great for people like me who enjoy really fresh coffee and have someone else that cant remember exactly how long ago they made the coffee.
Delay Brew - You can set the timer to make your coffee, up to 24 hours in advance. We didnt use this feature much, but it was really easy to program it when we did.
Audible Ready Signal - When the coffee is done brewing it would beep five times to let you know that the cycle was complete. I enjoyed this feature as well so I wouldnt have to keep looking to see if it was done making. I could just listen for the beeps.
Special Cleaning Cycle - Cleans your coffeemaker from mineral deposits. A red light will flash when the coffeemaker needs to be cleaned, which is anywhere from 40-80 cycles depending on your water. The cleaning takes approximately 45-60 minutes to complete and is really easy to do.
Warmer Plate Adjustment - You could adjust with a knob how warm you want the plate to stay.
What I Loved:
1. The look of the coffeemaker. Everyone that came into my kitchen commented on the cool coffeemaker we had. I was proud that something that looked so cool was sitting on my counter.
2. The clock letting you know how long the pot had been made for.
3. The five beeps when the brewing is complete and the five beeps when it is fixing to turn off.
4. It is easy to use and clean.
Another problem with this coffeemaker...
As if my previous story about the constant leaking wasnt enough I do have another complaint. There were several times that I made coffee that I had this misfortunate thing happen to me. I carefully would put my coffeemaker in the canister. Then I would pour in the water in the back of the coffeemaker. For some reason water would come through into where my coffee and coffee filter were and cause the filter to fold over. Then the water would get all stopped up, fill up to the top, cause grounds to go everywhere and make a huge mess. This happened to me on several occasions. It was quite irritating to say the least. This I could have overlooked (every once in awhile) if the stupid thing didnt leak every single day.
If anyone has any suggestions on how I should handle this problem please leave me a comment. I am really discouraged that I allowed myself to buy this stupid coffeemaker not once, but twice. I will listen to my husband next time.
UPDATE:
I took the first coffeemaker back to Walmart without a receipt. I did not have any problems returning it. I am so relieved. So I will send my husband later with the second coffeemaker and receipt. Then he can pick out which one he wants. I looked at all of the ones there and at Target and I just can't pick one.
