| alfortenberry's Full Review: Murad Acne Prone Skin Formula |
I had never had a problem with acne until after I graduated from high school. While other classmates struggled with blemishes throughout my teen years, I blissfully escaped the horror. Then one day, the breakouts came and nothing over-the-counter could make them disappear. Dermatologist prescribed treatments left me sensitive to sunlight and open to allergic reactions (one antibiotic gave me a serious rash). I have tried products by Philosophy, who specialize in problem skin, with little change.
Rightfully skeptical of the costly Murad treatment, I bought a small kit to experiment with before investing in the full line. I was amazed with the results I received! I began to see some improvement immediate with very little irritation. My main blemish areas are on my chin and forehead. Within a few days, the blemishes I had were less visible and the redness associated with them was also visibly reduced. Lingering redness around my face began to disappear as well. With continued use, most of my blemishes have cleared and I feel more comfortable with my complexion. I have also seen a reduction in oil in my "t-zone" area (I have combination skin). I can now wear foundation that offers less coverage or even go without foundation altogether.
The Acne Prone Skin Formula is a retinol based all-over skin treatment, which resembles the prescribed acne treatment Retin-A. It is applied all-over the face and neck after washing with the clarifying facial wash. It is suggested to begin applying the treatment once a day for a few weeks before increasing the application to twice daily. Like any retinol or salycilic acid treatment, irritation can occur, so treatment should be adjusted accordingly. Only a dime size amount is needed per application and one bottle will last approximately two months with twice-daily applications. I have had no irritation while using the product.
Murad is a skin system that requires use of all of its parts to create an overall desired effect. The Acne Prone Skin Formula is only one of the four part basic system which also includes a clarifying facial wash, a skin perfecting lotion, and Acne Management Formula spot treatment. My results can be attributed to using the entire system. The system even treats skim problems that resemble acne.
The Acne Prone Skin Formula alone costs $48; however the complete Acne System costs about $60 before shipping and includes a full-size facial wash (about a $30 value) and spot treatment ($15) and a slightly smaller container of the formula and lotion. Buying the entire system offers a better value than buying each product individually. The system offers enough of each product for two months of treatment, but I find it lasts longer than this.
Bottom line, Murad has been the most effective acne treatment system that I have tried. It effectively reduced my blemishes and has prevented new breakouts from forming, just as it advertises. While it requires the purchase of an entire line of products, its lasting positive effects far out way the price.
UPDATED 03/17/2006: After prolonged use of this product (about 3 -6 months), I began to develop itchy sores along my jaw line. Turns out, I had a skin infection. I stopped using the product, as directed by my physician, until the infection cleared. Once cleared, I began using the product again and the itchiness reappeared which leads me to believe that I was having an allergic reaction to the product. While this does not necessarily indicate a problem with the product specifically, it does suggest that it can cause problems for people with sensitive skin. I highly caution individuals who have a history of these types of problems. I have ceased the use of Murad products and now use a different brand with great satisfaction.
