The Bottom Line: "And if you're real good I'll make you feel good I want your spirits to climb So let me entertain you And we'll have a real good time" ~Stephen Sondheim
susidee34's Full Review: Naked Boys Singing - The Movie
I can't tell you when I have enjoyed a musical more than I did the movie release of the stage play, Naked Boys Singing. Written by Stephen Bates and Marie Cain; directed by Robert Schrock and Troy Christian, this 95 minute show won the GayVN Award for Best Alternative Release.
It is a selection of sixteen vignettes that follow a certain theme which is dictated by a song. It is not performed nude throughout the entire movie, sometimes the performers have clothes on, which they remove; others, they are nude and don clothes. However, for the most part, each scene begins and ends with the performers totally nude.
In the opening we meet each player as they arrive at the theatre for the days work. They aren't introduced but we watch each arrive. Some come clothed, some partially clothed. Some remove their clothing as they are arriving. But by the time they hit the stage they are completely and gloriously nude. Each performer is an accomplished singer and dancer and each contributes, in full or partially, to each scene shown.
Sometimes a single performer holds the spotlight like Joseph Keane did in his piece, Perky Little Porn Star. With the story he was enacting, it would have detracted by having more than one person involved at the time. In others, like Muscle Addiction, Anthony Manough begins the performance and then is joined by others until the entire cast is on stage for the end of the piece.
Another wonderful piece, Window to Window, starts with Vincent Zamora facing a window on what would be the opposite side of a courtyard. We see Phong Truong across the way but Vincent is doing the singing. While he sings his song, basically a love song directed to Phong, they mirror disrobing between the two until finally the scene fades away. Later in the production the song is reprised with Phong Truong now singing the same song across the courtyard to Vincent. Again, the scene fades away but finally cumulates on stage when Vincent and Phong sing Window to the Soul.
This show is done with complete artistry and beauty. The poses the boys/men strike, their defined bodies, make it an entirely enjoyable experience. Add to the fact, some wonderful music and lyrics and well choreographed dancing, made it an all too short 95 minute show. I have to give these guys big kudos because it couldn't have been an easy task to perform some of the dance moves and musical numbers with their members flying every which way.
It is an outstanding production done almost in the style of old burlesque with charismatic attitudes by the performers and a lot of well done humor. Again, as the name implies, this show is done with the performers in the nude, so if that offends you then I would highly suggest you avoid it. However, if you admire the form and beauty of the male body, then this is a great show for you, with some show tunes for extra fun. There are maybe a couple of guys that could afford to put on a coupla pounds and one redhead could definitely use a little color to his skin but Phong Troung - wow, what a toned body, athletic, great dancer and singer to boot.
I highly recommend this movie if you have a hankering for show tunes and dancing.
