So I am about 20 days post-op from having my Gastric-Bypass Roux-en-Y. Getting in my proteins in the form of shakes, or drinks has been a huge part of my life lately both pre and post operatively. There are things I look for in a protein shake. Prior to surgery, I was just looking for something that did not taste like dirt. Now that I have had the surgery, I am looking for something that tastes well, but more importantly will give me the most proteins in the least amount of liquid possible that I have to consume. I am also diabetic, and for reasons of Dumping, (a condition weight loss surgery patients get when they consume to much fats or sugars) I am restricted to sugar free protein options. I am also looking for a product that will not break the budget. This business can get really expensive, really quick.
Nature's Best Isopure Perfect No Carb- 3lbs. Protein Powders
Each three pound plastic canister contains 22 servings if you are taking the two scoop formula. With two scoops per serving you get 50g of protein, and it is absorbed 100%. Compared to a generic brand, that is 46 g protein, but only 46% of absorbable protein. In the generic can you get about 15 servings at 2 scoops per serving. I am paying $56.95 for the Isopure where as the generic brand I am paying only $12.99.
Comparing the two brands side by side the only other significant difference would be the sodium count. The Isopure has 320mg per serving, where the generic only has 55%. I am not really concerned with the sodium part of it. I lose a lot of sodium in my body, and don't really worry about it.
Your main ingredient In Isopure is the Whey Protein Isolate. Each Serving of Isopure Contains:
"3465mg of Isoleucine, 7865mg of Leucine, 30mg of baline, 4.6g of L-Glutamine."
Nature's Best Inc, has a website you can go to for more nutritional information than what I can give you. www.naturesbest.com.
Taste
I have not found ANY protien shakes that I can honestly say I love the flavor, or enjoy drinking. This product is no different. I really have a hard time consuming there Strawberries and Cream. I have also tried the Pineapple Orange Banana. The taste of that one is much better, and easier for me to consume.
I would like to mention that Isopure makes a great Clear beverage protein drink in which is my ultimate favorite. Here is the link if you want to check it out: http://www.epinions.com/content_352905563780
Ease of Use
This stuff is not easy to mix with a spoon, especially if you put ice in it, or really cold water prior to mixing. Normally I will mix mine with about 10 ounces of warm water in a blender. Then I will add a few ice cubes after it has mixed well.
My Experiences
Prior to surgery, I was looking for a shake that left me feeling a bit full. This product will do that. It is thick and heavy going down. This can be a pro, or a con really. Since having the surgery I can't really stomach an entire drink. It is to heavy on my pouch. It takes me all day to get one serving in. I just can't drink that much at one time and feel that full. So basically it depends on what your looking for.
Prior to surgery, I was still trying to lose weight. I did have a great experience with weight loss using this product as a meal replacement for breakfast and lunch. I ate a low carb/high protein meal for dinner, and was able to lose 9 pounds in the first week. That was great news to my surgeon who had placed me on this diet. I was able to shrink the liver before my operation enough for the surgery to be a success, and it went very smoothly.
Although I am not fond of this product now, I will highly recommend it for weight loss. You will feel full taking this product. I felt fuller consuming the Isopure than the generic. This is one reason I agreed to pay that huge difference in price. If your a gastric bypass patient, I would recommend asking the company for a sample, or purchasing in smaller trial size if available before spending a huge chunk of change like that. If you can't get the product down, there is no sense buying it. If your pre-surgery, this stuff is great in my opinion. For the normal person this stuff is great. Sometimes you can even get it on sale at GNC, or other places, and end up paying much less than what had. It pays to shop around.
Overall?
This product is exceptional minus the taste of course, and the steep prices if you can't catch a sale. It just isn't right for me at the moment. Maybe later in my weight loss journey I will be able to stomach it again. It is too soon to tell. For now I will be rushing out to get their sister product, the clear beverage protein drinks. They are lighter on my tummy and taste so very yummy.
