| marnica's Full Review: Neutrogena Skin Clearing Foundation |
Most of you who have read my epinions know that I am on a never ending quest for clear skin. I am one of those unfortunate adults who have more of a skin problem now than I did when I was a teenager. Creams, cleansers etc.... I have tried them all and regardless of how well they work...it seemed to be a losing battle. You see I would cleanse and moisturize with the appropriate acne fighting product, and it would help. But then I would have to put on makeup and that would seem to start the dreadful cycle all over again.
Enter acne fighting foundation. What a concept and why did it take so long for somebody to think of this? I remember a year or so ago I was watching TV and saw the lovely Jennifer Love Hewwitt pitching Neutrogena SkinClearing Makeup. I figured (like I do with most new products) I would give it a try.
This product claims to "clear up blemishes and prevent future breakouts." This product comes in a 1oz glass bottle that will cost you about $11.00 give or take depending on where you shop. I bought mine at Stop and Shop which is usually a bit cheaper than the chain drugstores. You have your choice of 12 shades:
Classic Porcelin, Blushing Ivory, Softest Gold, Natural Buff, Rose Cream, Golden Beige, True Beige, Copper Sand, Toasted Honey, Warm Caramel, Spiced Almond and Bronzed Cocoa.
WHAT I LIKE:
This product is lightweight and oil free and fragrance free so it won't compound your problem and clog pores. It blends easily and has a silky feel to it. It's main active ingredient is Salicylic Acid, which is a known acne fighter. It also contains ingredients which absorb oil (Talc), which helps control shine. It has a multi-vitamin complex as well. This product, in my experience, does help clear up blemishes, but wil not prevent future breakouts.
***I must add, however, that future breakouts depend a lot on what type of acne you have. I have the kind that is caused by hormonal imbalances therefore, nothing except antibiotics is going to prevent my breakouts. That is not to say that those with other types of acne might not find this product helpful in preventing blemishes. But I can only report my experience****
WHAT I DON"T LIKE:
As far as I can tell, there is no place that tells you the percentage of Salicylic Acid in this product. I perused the ingredient list and the manufacturer's page and could not find this information. This can be a problem for people with sensitive skin. I would like to know how much Salicylic Acid is in a product since this is an ingredient that causes drying. I mean is this so much to ask??? Another thing that I found aggravating is the ingredient list. It is located behind a tag which one has to peel off to get access to. Could they make it any harder? This product totes it's multi-vitamin complex, but one has to be a scientist to pick those ingredients out of the list. The only one I recognized was Pantothenic Acid which is some kind of B-vitamin from what I can remember. In my opinion this is not consumer friendly. Ingredients should be easily accesible. If a customer wants to check the ingredients of a product before they buy it, they should be able to do so easily.
I debated about including an ingredient list as it is lengthy, however I decided I would. After all it is difficult to get to on the bottle and not avaliable on the manufacturer's page. So here it goes:
INGREDIENT LIST:
Cyclomethicone, Purified Water, Talc, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Dipropylene Glycol, Polyglyeryl-4 Oleate, Dimethacone Copolyol, Synthetic Wax, Matricaria Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Panthoneic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Polysilicone-11, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Dimethicone, Quaternium-18, Hectorite, Peg-8 Propylene Glycol Cocoate, Silicia, Silicia Silyate, Alumina, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Ethylene Brassylate, Propylene Carbonate, Sodium Chloride, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Diazolidinyl Urea.
In my attempt to educate you all and make it easier for all of you to check ingredients, I have given myself a headache!! The ingredient list on the bottle is written in such tiny letters I have a headache now!!!But I am a dedicated consumer (wink wink).
I should also mention that you have the choice of liquid makeup or a compact foundation. I have tried both and prefer the liquid makeup. The compact doesn't give as good coverage in my opinion. I felt like I had a cakey mess on my face, where with the liquid I felt I had better control over the product and it was easier to blend.
Overall my opinion of Neutrogena SkinClearing Makeup is favorable... with the exception of the lack of information in the packaging. This product does help clear up blemishes. Is it a miracle product? No. But it certainly won't make your skin any worse. So if you are fighting a losing battle like myself....give it a try but don't expect it to change your world!!
