If you are a golfer, you are probably looking for two things; more distance and improved accuracy off the tee. A club that will give you both is the perfect club and one that is not often found.
I have hit the Nike Titanium 275cc for a for full weekend and came away impressed. Will it get my trusty Ping out of my bag? Not yet, but if the discrepancy in performance continues continues, it just may. I have always loved the Ping ISI, but this year it has deserted me- at least so far. Hence, the reason I am looking at other options.
WHAT I LIKE:
1. The 275cc is a beautiful club. Those of you who read my golf reviews know that I like to look down and see something that is pleasing to the eye. The 275cc is so beautiful I would consider dating it. The club has a blue tint that is relaxing and I would guess that this is by design. Nike probably figures that more pleasing and relaxing the club is to the eye, the better the performance may be. Or, they may figure that this will help them stand out.
2. The feel is solid. The club feels good in your hands and even better when actually making contact. Upon contact you get the feel of a solid club and that is not always the case with the drivers of today. Too many drivers give a feel of a hollow club head. I do not get this feeling with the 275cc.
3. Performance is what matters. Can I hit it high or low? Right to left and vice versa? I must be able to do all of the above or I am not satisfied with any club. The 275cc allows me to do all. The one thing that I cannot do is hit it off the fairway. However, I will not hold this against the 275cc as this is a problem with all drivers today. The 275cc. like virtually every driver these days, is too big to effectively hit off the fairway.
4. The Nike shaft is quite good. I know you are wondering what I mean by this. Some club manufacturers are known for using poor shafts. Callaway, for instance, does not use the best shafts available. If I was to order a Callaway club, I would have my pro order the club without the shaft. He would then put the shaft of my choosing on the club. With the Nike drivers, you do not have to go through all of this.
WHAT I DO NOT LIKE:
1. Nike has already come out with a new line. Yeah, I know, if this line works for me, why not use it? Well, my thought is that they must think the new clubs are better or they would not have rolled them out. Nike now offers the 400cc and the 350cc drivers. The difference is basically in the size of the club head. The 400cc is a huge driver. I have hit both and am equally impressed.
2. The lack of professional representation. Yes, Tiger uses the Nike irons, but I do not think he left the Titleist drivers yet. The biggest name Nike trots out from the tour is David Duval. Yes he is a big name, but he has not done anything on the golf course in two years. Where are the other players? Why are they not using the Nike drivers?
3. I did not experience an increase in distance. Not that I expected to see a huge difference, but I did expect to see some difference. Though I wish the club added five or 10 yards, the ability to put the ball in the fairway is just as important and the 275cc has done so for me.
Recommendation:
I like the 275cc, but will not end up putting it in my bag. I will wait until I have tried the 350cc and the 400cc to see what they can do. If I am able to hit the ball as straight and long with those clubs as I do with the 275cc, I will be replacing my Ping ISI. The 275cc is a good club, but apparently not the best Nike now has to offer.
