| dmcostello's Full Review: Nokia 5120 Cell Phone |
I’ve long since resisted the call of the cell phone. Many years ago there was a deal through the company I worked for so I signed up and gave the phone to my wife. It gave me peace of mind to know that if she broke down, she would be able to communicate with me, AAA, whomever.
Since that time, though, there has been an explosion in the number of cell phones out there. You can’t go anywhere without seeing people carrying a phone with them. People are constantly talking on those little devices as they drive, walk down the street, basically everywhere. Putting aside the safety issues, I started to think that there had to be something to these phones that I was missing.
I knew that since I had purchased my phone, the cellular companies started offering digital phone service. As a tech-minded kind of person, I associate the word ‘digital’ with ‘better’. In the case of the cell phones, ‘digital’ means ‘more’. More services, more uses, more potential. The years that had passed since I first bought my analog phone has not only been the years where everyone and their brother got on the cell phone bandwagon, but it also it was the time where cell phones became useful and vital.
I got a good deal at my local Cellone store. If I donated $20 to the Special Olympics, they would give me a free Nokia 5120. I did a little research on this phone. Even though this was a lower end Nokia, it blew away the Motorola that I currently owned. It was much smaller, the battery lasted longer, the options were much greater, and it was cheaper to own. I ended up buying two of them, both linked to the same pool of minutes.
The Nokia 5120 is a good basic cell phone. It does what any phone should do, it makes and receives calls. That is really all I wanted this phone for. But as I’ve owned this phone and used more of its features, I have finally seen why cell phones have become so prevalent in our society.
The phone is small enough to carry with you. It fists easily in your pocket. This alone makes it a much more useful device. If it were too big a burden to carry, what good would it be? This phone has the ability to store 100 numbers. I can now look up and dial phone numbers by the name of the person who I am calling. The phone is also caller-id capable, so when the phone rings I can see who is calling. And if the person calling is in the 100-number phone book, I will see their name, not their number. A nice touch.
This phone also has messaging capabilities. It will let me know when I have voice mail messages that I can pick up right form the phone. It is like having your own, private answering machine. The 5120 is also text message capable. I can go to the Cellone web site, and send a short text message to my wife’s phone. ‘Call me at home’, ‘I’ll be late from work’, anything you want. I’ve used this feature to send myself reminders, or pieces of information that I need to carry with me. It is a very useful feature.
This phone has the ability to be customized to suit your personality. You can change the face of the phone from the plain black to just about anything. It can be changed to any color, sports team; there are hundreds of choices. You can also set the ring to any of 35 choices. From Jingle Bells to Mozart. Now these are not earth shattering options, but they are very nice. I’ve found that these phones become a personal thing. Your phone number, a place where people can contact you.
I’ve been converted. The 5120 is a great little phone. It isn’t as advanced as others. You can’t browse the web on it or make phone calls by just saying the person’s name. But if you want a phone, a phone that does the things that you would want a phone to do, the 5120 is a great choice. It is inexpensive, rugged, and very, very usable. I recommend it if you are looking for a cell phone.
