| kingsoju's Full Review: Nokia 6185 Cell Phone |
You know, it's too bad that Sprint PCS has classified this phone as a "closeout" phone. Given its quirks, the Nokia 6185 is one of the most ergonomic cell phones out there.
The LiIon battery that Sprint PCS bundles with the phone gives the phone a smooth rounded feel that makes it easy to hold. This was the first phone that I've owned that didn't have a hole for the microphone, but it didn't prevent the people I called from hearing me. Plus the games on there are most likely legends in the cell phone world (like "Snake" and "Logic").
Other strength of this phone include the "profile" feature, which lets you customize the ring mode and loudness depending on your environment (e.g., if you were in the library, you can easily set the phone so that it will vibrate. Likewise if you were driving on a bumpy freeway, you can easily set it so that it can ring loud!*).
There were a couple of quirks that I experienced with this phone. First, the signal strength indicator is either a liar, or my current cell phone (Motorola Timeport) is. I'm not taking sides. But when the signal is weak, calls get dropped. According to an article in Fortune, Nokia didn't license CDMA (the protocol used by Sprint PCS) from Qualcomm, which might explain this.** Of course Sprint PCS' coverage in the South Bay (particularly where I live) is good and bad too. I hear that the reception is bad in buildings. At work the reception is good. Inside my apartment, the reception is average/bad. I don't expect the signals to penetrate walls like X-rays, but some better support is expected, in my opinion.
In conclusion, if the Nokia 6185 had the wireless web browser, I'd still have it. That's the only reason I moved on to another phone.

* Don't use a cell phone while driving. It's a source of road rage, close-calls (which lead to road rage), and bad driving. :-)
