All the women in my family use Noxzema. We have dark blue tubs of it in every bathroom and shower. My grandmother (may she rest in peace) used to tell me that her mother (my great-grandmother Rebecca after whom I'm named) used Noxzema all her life and had perfect skin. However, this is simply a correlation. Noxzema doesn't cause blemishes to disappear, and it will certainly not make your skin perfect.
However, this classic product is a terrific cleanser for people with "normal" skin. It's good for skin maintenance. But if you have bad acne and/or blackheads, you're better off with a cleanser that's formulated for oily or acne-prone skin.
Truth in Advertising
Just like the commercials say, Noxzema "dissolves oil without overdrying." So, if your skin is slightly shiny when you wake up, Noxzema cleans it but does not strip it of its natural oils. However, if you have dry skin, you will need a separate moisturizer as well. And if your skin is a bit on the oily side, you will probably need an extra shine control product.
If you have acne, Noxzema is not effective in controlling break-outs. When I was in high school, I had to use Noxzema in the mornings and a benzoyl peroxide cleanser at night. The commercials imply that Noxzema is a product for teenagers, but many teens need something stronger for their acne-prone skin.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Noxzema is not oil-free. Therefore, if you wash your face with it and then go out in the sun, your face is more susceptible to sunburn. Be sure to wear sunscreen after washing your face with Noxzema in the summer. On the other hand, if you do get a sunburn, Noxzema is good for soothing the burn.
Also, this product is not meant for removing eye makeup. It definitely stings if you get it in your eyes.
My favorite thing about Noxzema is that it comes in a convenient tub that is very easy to seal tightly for travel. Also, you always know how much you have left since you can see into the container.
The scent is not fruity or clinical smelling; it just smells clean. Also, the texture is very pleasant and it is easy to wash off. Afterwards, you may feel a slight, pleasant tingling due to the camphor, menthol, and eucalyptus included in the ingredients.
Noxzema is a white substance that feels like a cross between soap and lotion. It has a smooth texture that feels neither greasy nor powdery. When you first open the tub, the cream can be a bit hard, but once you wet your hands and use the product a couple of times, it become softer and easier to apply to your face.
You can apply Noxzema to either wet or dry skin, although I think that it is easier to apply on a wet face. Just splash some water onto your face, dip your fingers into the tub of Noxzema, and apply onto your face. Use finger tips (or a washcloth, according to the instructions) to "massage in a circular motion."
In terms of price, Noxzema is reasonable at approximately $5 for a 10.75 ounce container in the United States.
A Proud History
Noxzema was created in 1914 as a remedy for sunburn and eczema. It was sent to servicemen in World War II as a soothing balm for their feet.
