Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie''s plot.
This past weekend I watched the movie Obsessed on 'Pay Per View.' I was curious to see the movie but I didn't go see it on the big screen because I knew that I would kick myself for paying full price to see the film. I knew that the advertisement for the film probably showed everything there was to see and know. I was correct in my assumption. And, to make matters worse, there was no cussing or nudity which are usually two major pluses for me.
Sharon (Beyonce) met Derek (Idris Elba) when she was his assistant three years ago. Derek is the Vice President of the company, and had the reputation of being quite the playboy. But he fell in love with Sharon and has remained a family man ever since. They have a baby, Kyle, who's probably about two years old. They've been married for three years, and the guys at Derek's office razz him about taking away their 'eye candy' when he married Sharon.
When Lisa (Ali Larter) starts filling in as a temp at the office, she immediately sets her sites on Derek. She tries to get him to have sex with her at their Christmas party and then again in the parking lot. Derek doesn't tell his wife because Lisa quits her job and he assumes he'll never have to deal with her again. However, when she shows up at one of his business trips and drugs him and then tries to commit suicide in his hotel room, things start to spiral out of control. Sharon thinks he's having an affair and kicks her loving husband out of the house. However that spunky Lisa just won't give up.
I was prepared for a real mess when it came to Obsessed. I had read several horrible reviews about the movie. However, I thought that the beginning was fairly well done. Ali Larter really seemed ultra creepy as weird stalker-girl Lisa, and I could feel the tension between Lisa and Derek. However, when Sharon got involved it all fell apart.
First of all, Beyonce is pretty and a great singer and dancer, but the girl can't act. She is definitely the weakest link in the movie. When she and Lisa get into a fight I laughed at how ridiculous Beyonce looked. She's wooden and she shows absolutely no emotion. It's like she's performing half-hearted and she hates the movie she's in. She looked plain stupid, and I would be embarrassed if I had given such a poor performance.
I think Obsessed is very cliche and the plot and story have been done dozens of times already. However Ali Larter performed well and made us believe that her character was a lunatic. Idris Elba was convincing as the family man who was getting extremely irritated with Lisa for chasing him and not leaving him alone. If it weren't for Beyonce's horrible character, the movie might have had a chance to be a bit more interesting and 'real.' But, it just didn't happen.
If you happen to be watching late night cable and you come across Obsessed, you might want to watch it for awhile to check out Ali Larter. She's a great actress. Although, I wouldn't watch the whole movie (it's way too long at 1:48), and I would channel surf when it's Beyonce's turn to say anything.
