My partner has been complaining about all the peripherals on the desk at home for the last year and a half. With extra money coming in from recent job opportunities, he told me to pick out a multifunctional machine that would replace the fax, scanner and color printer. I did a lot of research and price comparisons. I found that the best looking machine in the $400 to $500 range was the HP T45. The cheaper machines, looked to be just that, CHEAP. The more expensive machines, didn't seem to have any better quality specs.
In my research I found that the price is pretty much fixed, it is $399.99 no matter where you go. Sure you may find it $10 less on some .com site, but you will have to pay $50 shipping. I just checked to make sure it was sold at all three of the office supply chains and bought it while on a business trip in a tax free state.
Once I got back home, I had to start unraveling the rats nest of cables behind my PC and started removing all the cables I didn't need anymore. Once I had the cables and old equipment removed I had all kinds of room for my new HP T45. The T45 is very wide, but does not require much depth on the table. Up higher, the scanner exit tray, does stick out a whole sheet of paper in front of the machine.
The T45 has both color and black ink cartridges loaded, so no need switching between the two types.
I first tried faxing between the new and old machines (we have two phone lines at home, making this easy). The T45 was able to send to a machine with a answering machine on and the T45 was able to receive with an answering machine one. It was so nice getting a fax on real paper and not curly, slippery thermal paper.
I then tried tearing a color ad page out of a magazine and copying it. I couldn't believe the quality of the copy! My partner thought the copy was better looking then the original. I had heard the scanner on these multi-functional machines were not very good, but I'm impressed. The color printing was also superb. I should mention that the color printer I was replacing was a Cannon BJ250, it probably wouldn't take much to impress me.
One of the most important features for my home is that the faxing and copying functions are stand-alone and very easy to use. Although others in my house have computer phobias, they are able to fax and copy without having to touch the computer.
Bottom line, the HP T45 is a great machine, I wish I had purchased it a long time ago.
